As a territory / field sales manager in an FMCG company, how do you react to the request “we will be going for a trade visit” There are two reactions to this request, it’s either you have an instant running tummy or a feeling of excitement Having lead countless trade visits, I have experienced both feelings, failed miserably on a trade visit and also excelled on a number of trade visits, i can be able to tell you how to fail and how to excel A request for a trade visit is like a day of judgement, where goods deeds will be appauled and bad deeds punished, in fact i faced a disciplinary committee one time for a poor trade visit With this background, let me share with you how you can have a good day on a trade visit as a territory sales manager in an FMCG business 📌 Have a dedicated trade visit route, in most cases you lead the visiting team on your sales route, you are recognized as the manager in charge and assume no one knows you route better than you. Have a dedicated route you visit regularly and know everything happening on this route, get acquainted with outlets owners and make sure they are informed on a regular bases on every trade update This is not to say don’t visit other routes, but these route should be your priority 📌 If visit is announced to you earlier, get the visit route “ready” for the visit. Inform customer ahead of time, make sure all current trade activities during the visit period is well communicated and customers understand and adhere, also make sure merchandising is on point 📌Follow the dedicated route, don’t skip outlets on your dedicated route 📌 On the visit day, make sure you lead the team or visiting person with confidence, give a background (monthly sales trends, sales contribution, key SKUs that sell etc) of each outlet even before get into the outlets. This proofs you are on top of issues in your territory Failure to follow these few titbits can prove fatal on a trade visit Have a great selling week For insights on CPG commercial management and leadership, follow me and repost to share with someone #cpgmarketing #sales #tradevisits
