Senior Solutions Architect, Helping Partners and Customers with their Streaming Analytics Use Cases at SAS IoT

One of the reasons I love working in Streaming analytics and IoT domain is the impact it has on real world critical scenarios. My first project in the IoT division at SAS was to integrate some of the calculations that Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) already had to calculate water surge, into SAS Event Stream Processing (ESP) to do real time calculations in buoys deployed out in the sea. Today morning when I was reading this post, the first thing that came to my mind was the possible impact those ESP servers running those calculations were having here. #iot #streamingdata #realtimeanalytics

Ok so history was made last night in the Netherlands - late last night my Dutch friends and colleagues at Rijkswaterstaat were taking the brunt of #stormpia. Winds blowing across the north sea resulted in surges across their coastal defences with the Maeslantkering (Maeslant barrier) being closed in anger for the first time in its history to protect Rotterdam against a forecast storm surge of +3.17m NAP. Peter Vlam and his team were calm and professional in the first official deployment of the barrier monitoring the computer system known as 'BOS' and co-ordinating with the Port of Rotterdam ensuring the navigational traffic was stopped allowing the barrier to close. The barrier was closed at 20:10 with water levels rising to +3.34m NAP on the downward side of the barrier preventing a forecast level of +3.17m NAP of water in Rotterdam; some 170mm above the operational closure level of the barrier. The team successfully managed the closure through the night re-opening the barrier around 03:00 this morning and reinstating navigational traffic to the Port of Rotterdam. This barrier is the largest barrier with a ball-shaped joint hinge in the world, with the hinge diameter measuring 10 metres, and weighing 680 tonnes. The construction of the barrier cost 450 million euro and is the height of the Eiffel Tower - each side. More information can be found here on the structure - https://lnkd.in/enwncJMJ Well done to the team and everyone involved in ensuring we protect people and infrastructure. Often the unsung heroes working in the middle of the night when most are asleep not knowing how they are being protected. I wish you all a safe and well recovery from the event and a less 'excitable' Christmas and New Year.
