The lack of respect for this sacred burial place is unreal. Here is my latest column:

Sewing: Historic Black cemetery where Jack Yates is buried in deep disrepair, roamed by dogs

This saddens me a lot. Thanks for shining a light on what has happened there & let us hope “the right thing” finally occurs. It never ceases to make me cringe that brainless individuals do things they believe they can get away with because of White Privilege & other ilk that falls into abuse. Recently, I had the sad obligation to handle something that came to my attention. It wasn’t a grave site but similarly inexcusable.

Joy, this would be a great project for the juniors and/or seniors of Jack Yates High School. They could work in conjunction with a history teacher or the Buffalo Soldiers Museum and learn about Jack Yates history while helping repair the cemetery. In addition, one of our corporate neighbors could donate funds to assist in this repair by donating staff and sod, shovels, etc.
