There was once I witnessed a board meeting unlike any other. An expert chairperson, hired for their proficiency, ultimately estranged the board members due to their abrasive approach and concentration on immediate concerns. It was a stark reminder of the importance of effective leadership in this crucial space. Great board chairs are assertive, yes, but they're also empowering and strategic. Here are some key steps to ensure your board meetings are productive and positive: Be a Facilitator, Not a Dictator: Your role is to guide discussions, not dominate them. Encourage all voices to be heard and build consensus. Focus on the Long Game: While addressing immediate needs is important, don't lose sight of the board's strategic vision. Steer conversations towards long-term goals and impactful decisions. Embrace Healthy Conflict: Disagreement can be a catalyst for good ideas. Build a safe space for respectful debate and encourage diverse perspectives. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare: A well-defined agenda and pre-distributed materials ensure everyone arrives informed and ready to contribute. Hold Everyone Accountable (Including Yourself): Set clear expectations and follow through on action items. Hold yourself accountable for keeping discussions focused and moving forward.
