I love this initiative by Mattel - I am wondering if getting girls more involved in sport and physical activity can help to close the dream gap? Recent research by the 'Women in Sport' charity has shown that there are still deeply ingrained gender stereotypes of parents with primary school aged children which influences the sports and activities the children are encouraged to get involved with. Resulting in many girls seeing being sporty and active as more appropriate for boys. By the time girls reach the age of 17-18 years old 55% of them are disengaged from sports and physical activity. However, if girls are involved in sport and physical activity they are more likely to; 1. be physically healthier - resulting in lower risk of obesity and osteoporosis 2. be mentally healthier - resulting in lower risk of mental health issues such as depression 3. participate in STEM related subjects 4. get higher paid jobs - as sport participation has been shown to help with teamwork, communication, confidence, leadership skills, motivation, and resilience. 5. hold a senior management position So although it may not be the only answer, it seems that if we can enable and encourage girls to be involved in sport and physical activity it may mean that we see more girls taking STEM subjects and becoming senior leaders in businesses, as well as being physically and mentally healthier. What do you think? An individual's level of self-esteem grows when they are provided with opportunities to build confidence in their physical abilities For instance, when an individual engages in outdoor activity, confidence in their abilities grows and in turn, promotes self-respect and builds self-esteem #parenting #parentsofcolombo #momsincolomb #parentsoftoddlers #parentsofpreschoolers #parentsofelementary #SriLanka #internationalschoolsrilanka #expats #expatssrilanka #preschoo #preschoolers

I've yet to meet a relocating parent who doesn't have some worry about how their children will adjust. Tanya Crossman is an expert in this field, and I want to share this article as I feel it is spot on with identifying the most important action parents can make to help their kids. Well worth a read for any expat or migrant family. #relocation #expatsupportservicesnz #newlifeinNZ https://lnkd.in/guRGvX2r
After 18 years working with TCKs, spending time in so many countries, international schools, and other international communities, what is the one key thing I recommend to families living abroad? Five years ago, Barbie started the #dreamgap campaign — to reduce the gap that comes between girls and their full potential. I wish we were further along. But if you have a chance to make a difference, seize it. Mentor. Teach. Encourage interests. Use your social capital. Support girls’ organizations. Every time you impact just one young person, you could be helping to close that gap. If you need a reminder of why, check out the video below. #confidencecatalyst https://lnkd.in/eui7QeKm
