Huddle up community you think? With the top ten lists we'd start at 10 and work backwards. But not so fast my friends. This week's play in the Application Delivery top ten starts at the top with number one week DNS practices. Game on. If BGP is the chewing gum and duct tape holding the Internet together, and it is yeah, I said it, then DNS or the Domain Name System is the Yellow Pages, or if you're even older than that, reference a Rolodex. Or if you're really getting U there in years, the human switchboard operator. DNS really has one job, translating names that are easy for us to remember and manage into IP addresses that are easier for computers to work with. That's it, That's what it does. But it's absolutely crucial for the smooth operation of the Internet. When things go South, and they do, it's a 5 nines chance. The problem is DNS. Weak DNS practices can have significant consequences on application performance. Availability and scalability. Let's start with performance and availability. I'd separate them but they go hand in hand. Setting the time to live or TTL on your DNS records is the primary dial. Set it too low and you overburden the infrastructure and impact your applications response times when servers are sluggish. Set it too high and you're available resources in an HOA scenario sit idle during the failure. Tuning the TTL, which by the way is not a one-size-fits-all, is an often overlooked priority for initial. Deployments, as well as during your application update and review procedures like the TTL, DNS SEC settings, or the lack thereof, can impact both performance and availability. Performance by way of redirection for malicious inspection, or worse, availability from attacks like cash poisoning. If you aren't protecting your domains with the DNS SEC, get on it. Finally, let's touch on scalability. Insecure dynamic DNS updates can result in unauthorized changes to DNS records, hindering the applications ability to handle increased demand and expand globally. This is not the place to accept defaults, people. You must control and authenticate changes to your DNS records to prevent unauthorized modifications. This ensures that the DNS system can scale seamlessly to meet growing demand. So gear up and go strengthen your DNS practices for a more secure and efficient. Day 39, #120 Today, I dove into the basics of Socket.IO, a powerful library for building real-time, bidirectional communication between servers and clients.
