Lifting up my relative General John Fulton Reynolds on this Memorial Day (along with the connection between the Civil War and civil rights). A respected senior commander in the Union Army, Reynolds was key in committing the Army to the Battle of Gettysburg (where he unfortunately died). Resistant to the politics of Washington, D.C., Reynolds previously declined President Abraham Lincoln’s request that he command the Army of the Potomac (the penchant to buck bureaucracy remains strong in his family). Today, you can see him standing resolutely in places throughout Pennsylvania (including in front of Philadelphia’s City Hall). Many think that the Civil War was a long ago moment in time - separate and apart from who we are today. Columbia University Professor Barbara Fields corrects this misguided notion: “I think what we need to remember, most of all, is that the Civil War is not over until we, today, have done our part in fighting it, as well as understanding what happened when the Civil War generation fought it. William Faulkner said once that history is not “was,” it’s “is,” and what we need to remember about the Civil War is that the Civil War “is,” in the present, as well as the past. The generation that fought the war, the generation that argued over the definition of the war, the generation that had to pay the price in blood, that had to pay the price in blasted hopes and a lost future also established a standard that will not mean anything until we finish the work. You can say there’s no such thing as slavery anymore, we’re all citizens. But if we’re all citizens, then we have a task to do to make sure that that, too, is not a joke. If some citizens live in houses and others live on the street, the Civil War is still going on. It’s still to be fought, and regrettably, it can still be lost.” #CivilWar #civilrights #historylives #justice #Pennsylvania

September 11th marks a solemn anniversary, a day etched in our nation's history. It was a day of immense sorrow, a day that tested our resolve as a nation. In the face of unimaginable tragedy, Americans came together, united in grief and determination. Twenty-three years later, the echoes of that day still resonate. The scars remain, a constant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment. As a deeply divided nation, the 9/11 Remembrance offers a powerful opportunity for reflection and unity. It serves as a stark contrast to the partisan battles that often consume our discourse. Let us remember the victims, their families, and the heroes who risked their lives to save others. Let us honor their memory by striving for a more compassionate and understanding society. Let us recommit ourselves to the values that make America great: freedom, justice, and the unwavering belief in the inherent dignity of every human being. May the 9/11 Remembrance inspire us to bridge our differences, to find common ground, and to work together towards a brighter future for all. #patriotday #neverforget #9/11 #september11 Colorado Springs Hispanic Business Council - The Hispanic Chamber The Adelante Leadership Institute United States Air Force Academy Randy Helms

Lessons… …From History Lessons learned or the same old mistakes? How many times have we heard that hackneyed empty phrase ‘lessons have been learned so that it will never happen again’. Well ‘it’ does happen again time after time, without any consequence for those who should be held to account, often promoted. The D Day 80 commemorations 1944 – 2024 took place on Thursday 6 June. Closer to home the Chelsea Pensioners were out in style for their Founders Day Parade. We should always remember them and their sacrifice (talk is cheap, actions count). My son is named after his uncle who joined the war effort as a young man to fight for the freedoms we enjoy. After 9 months of training he went on active service and was shot down in a plane, dying 2 days later. He was 19 years old. I wonder whether he would think, looking at the world today, the sacrifice he made with his life was worth it. Characteristics of our armed forces are honourable service, stewardship of the profession, military expertise, esprit de corps and trust. What a better world we would live in if these applied across the board to institutions, organisations and political circles. Integrity matters and those that hold power should be invested in it. We seem to live in a quagmire of ‘my truth (or narrative), your truth (or narrative)’ versus ‘the actual/factual truth (the reality)’. We have the right to expect better, call out the bad, bring in the good. Change is always possible if people choose to make positive change. #OwningYourWellbeing make a good call. https://lnkd.in/eQs7KVth

From the White House Briefing Room: "On June 19, 1865, freedom finally came for the 250,000 enslaved people of Texas. That day, which would become known as Juneteenth, the Army arrived to enforce what had already been the law of the land for two and a half years — the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we recognize that Juneteenth not only marks the end of America’s original sin of slavery but also the beginning of the work at the heart and soul of our Nation: making the promise of America real for every American." What does that mean for healthcare? It means that there is health equity for ALL. On this Juneteenth, we invite you to reflect, feel, and act. Reflect on how you are contributing to health equity for all (you= individual, team and systemic contributions); to experience all the emotions that come up as you reflect on Juneteenth and our sin of slavery; and act - take at least one action to include someone different from you in access to care and other resources that promote well-being and a healthy life. #juneteenth, #healthequity, #diversityandinclusion, #slavery
