𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫 Plant 2 of Beiersdorf Manufacturing Hamburg GmbH (BMH), located in the Billbrook district of Hamburg, has a special and significant importance for Beiersdorf: It is the only location worldwide for the production of the NIVEA cream base material – the emulsifier Eucerit. Eucerit (Greek: the beautiful wax) is a natural product. It was first obtained in 1900 from the wool wax of sheep by the chemist Isaac Lifschütz. In 1911, the pharmacist Dr. Oscar Troplowitz, the dermatologist Dr. Paul Gerson Unna and the chemist Dr. Isaac Lifschütz developed NIVEA cream. Lifschütz’ earlier discovery, Eucerit, served as the basis and made the impossible possible: With Eucerit, the world’s first stable water-in-oil emulsion was produced. I was reading a paper today about the latest technology advancements for drug product stability and storage - one of them, the lyophilization. All of a sudden, the very basics came back to my mind, hitting my Consciousness like a storm. Lyophilization is vital for humankind, and it is made possible by a unique “anomalous” feature that Water solely has in Nature (at the best of our current knowledge). That negative slope of the Clausius-Clapeyron curve between the liquid and the solid phase is THE “ANOMALY” that makes lyophilization technologically possible. Stop and think. Thanks to this, we can store key drug products longer than it could be possibile (e.g., due to their reactivity with the container and/or their instability, while in liquid form). Moreover, we can do that at room temperature, easing the whole supply chain to the very corner of our beautiful planet. This contributes to improve humans’ health worldwide, increasing the prospective, the longevity, and the quality of peoples’ life.
