Wessex Institute is pleased to announce its summer course on Fatigue Fracture Analysis which will be presented by Prof Ahmad Varvani-Farahani from Toronto Metropolitan University. Over the past twenty-five years, Prof Varvani-Farahani has been consistently investigating the fatigue and ratcheting response of engineering components and structures at various loading conditions. Practical-analytical aspects of fatigue failure and fracture mechanics for engineering components and structures subjected to various cyclic loading conditions will be discussed during the course. Try applying torsion to a piece of chalk as shown in the figure. It will fail at an angle of 45 degrees. Do you know why this happens? When a material like chalk is twisted, the maximum tensile stress occurs at a 45-degree angle to the axis of torsion. This is why the chalk fails along this plane. Understanding this phenomenon is crucial for materials science and structural engineering. Check out our detailed post for more insights into torsion and material failure. #StructuralEngineering #MaterialsScience #EngineeringEducation #CivilEngineering #MechanicalEngineering #TechBlog #EngineeringStudents #STEM #Eigenplus

Infinite elongation in the conical bar due to point load? When analyzing structures, assumptions are crucial. In this case, we looked at the elongation of a conical bar under a point load. Using standard formulas, the result seems to suggest infinite elongation — but why? This outcome highlights the importance of carefully considering geometry and boundary conditions in structural analysis. It serves as a reminder that even simple assumptions can lead to unexpected results. 💬 Engineers, have you encountered surprising results like this in your calculations? Share your thoughts and insights! #StructuralEngineering #EngineeringAnalysis #ProblemSolving #Mechanics
