New CPS Guidance: A Step Forward in Addressing 'Love Bombing' and Coercive Control In a landmark update, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has revised its prosecution guidance to put a spotlight on 'love bombing'—a deceptive tactic used by perpetrators to exert control over their victims. This manipulative behavior involves intermittent acts of affection, such as sending romantic gestures, to confuse and dominate the victim. The updated guidance is a crucial tool for prosecutors, enabling them to build robust cases by scrutinising the suspect's actions, which often aim to disrupt or mislead criminal proceedings. . This feels like a positive step in recognising the range of tactics male and female abusers use to "hook" the victims and dispel the myth that abusers use only cruelty. It may also help professionals in Family Court understand how they are often treated by abusers during proceedings, only revealing their perfect facade to disarm them and recruit them. If a solicitor advises to file a domestic abuse claim, they should be able to communicate that advice to the police with the victim and not leave the victim to do that on their own. Listen to the victim, do not assume that the victim will want to follow advice to file a complaint, and understand what type of solution a victim survivor needs. Will filing a complaint put her in further danger or raise the stakes in what is seen as a "conflict"? You get inconsistency. You get a disaster.
