This is a concerning statistic, especially in light of current events in our own city and around the world.

Alarming new survey data shows that the percentage of Canadians who believe that historical accounts and representations of the Holocaust have been exaggerated is on the rise. As the number of living Holocaust survivors continues to decrease, we face losing sight of the stories that drive empathy and learning on the true nature and scale of these horrific events. This Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia. There are many things we can all do to create a better future. We can speak up against Holocaust and genocide denial and distortion; we can challenge prejudice; we can encourage others to learn about the Holocaust and more recent genocides. Whilst racism and hatred do not always lead to genocide, all genocides begin with insidious stages including propaganda, ‘othering’ and dehumanisation. #HolocaustMemorialDay2025 #ForABetterFuture

On this Holocaust Memorial Day, we mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is a day to remember all those who lost their lives and never forget where hatred can lead. Since 7th October, one of the worst attacks on the Jewish people since the Holocaust, we have seen a shocking rise in antisemitism across the world. Today should be a reminder to commit to redouble our efforts to tackle it and say #neveragain. #HMD2025

Today (27 January) commemorates the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Entire families and communities were decimated during the Holocaust, and in numerous instances, the identities of the victims remain unknown. On this Holocaust Memorial Day, we are presented with an opportunity to actively contribute to a more promising future. By educating ourselves about the Holocaust and more recent genocides, we can strive for a better future. Although racism and hatred do not invariably culminate in genocide, we can endeavour to create a world where individuals do not endure prejudice or persecution based on their faith, ethnicity, or other characteristics.
