Last week our Surrey board member Gabriel Makinwa spoke on a panel at the Wates Group pavilion at the UKREiiF conference.
Great job by Neil Bradley for moderating and fellow panellists Emma Weller, Oliver Brooks Ben Jowett for contributing to a great conversation.
A few really interesting take aways:
- There’s an appetite from all parts of the supply chain to move from a risk mitigation approach typical of contracting to more relationship based approach.
- The fragmented nature of construction with several stakeholders makes it even harder for technology to make a real difference as companies use different systems that don’t speak to each other. Is there room for a shared framework that all systems must connect into?
- The productivity in the construction industry has not increased at the same rate as spend on technology so there’s a huge gap still to be filled here.
- We need government, property developers, designers, consultants and contractors to rethink the way we deliver projects. Everyone focuses on protecting their downside vs optimising for shared upside.
If you would like to discuss these important points why not catch Gabriel at our next Surrey event on 19th June.

The past week and a half has been quite the whirlwind! I’d like to take a moment to catch my breath and extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone for their incredible support and well-wishes. It wasn't all smooth sailing—our emails went offline due to a website error—but we navigated the challenges, implemented future contingencies and emerged stronger.
This busy period included attending the Master Builders Association Regional meeting, where it was a pleasure to hear valuable insights from industry leaders like Brad Walters from Equifax, Lou Stokanovski from Keystone Lawyers, and Andrew Savage from Weathertex.
I also enjoyed the Made In The Hunter (Architecture) networking event. It was fascinating to hear Evan Graham and Steele Olney share their vision for the future of passive homes, and Peter Borg shed light on the challenges and opportunities in financing these projects.
Looking ahead, we are excited about embarking on the ICIRT certification process. We firmly believe that initiatives like these will continue to strengthen and advance our industry.
Very insightful to hear from leading KCs at Landmark Chambers today regarding the implications of the recently announced National Planning Policy Framework.
Housing delivery and greenbelt / greybelt were hot topics for discussion!
Do get in touch with our Head of Planning, Luke Thrumble, to discuss how the new NPPF might be relevant for your respective sites.

In delivering talent for the future, through apprenticeships and all other entry and progression pathways, competence and the safety of building design, delivery and occupation must be considered no matter the occupation, level or role - it is everyone's job!
That is why in our recent revisions to all the TAC occupational (apprenticeship) standards, we have included the need for initial and ongoing professionalism, understanding of competence and its impacts, and not going 'beyond your own' competence levels. This is already hard baked into the the professional standards for EngTech and IEng - the outcomes aimed for with our apprenticeships.
In taking in the outcomes from the latest Grenfell report, we must all now act and work together to delivering these outcomes for apprentices, assessed via the EPA process in collaboration with our professional institution partners, and move the dial beyond just being 'academically qualified'.
We must make sure all our apprentices, graduates, mentors, line managers and those responsible for training hear this message loud and clear.
We cannot let this happen ever again.
Ahead of the NAHB International Builders’ Show, our editors reviewed some of the top product and economic trends LBM dealers expect to see in the coming year.
● Easier-to-install products - to ease construction crew grappling with labor shortages.
● Emphasis on outdoor living - homeowners want to be able to use outdoor space during all seasons.
● Low-maintenance materials - homeowners and builders are investing in materials that are built to last.
● Prioritizing resilience - harsher weather conditions require tougher building products.
