IHMC Lecture Series Dr. Frank Butler THE TALK: Transforming Battlefield Trauma Care “Transforming Battlefield Trauma Care” is the extraordinary account of how a small group of world-class trauma experts joined forces with America’s best combat medics to rewrite the rule book in battlefield medicine - and then to introduce the revolutionary new concepts called Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) to a disbelieving medical world. This presentation provides a first-hand account of the challenges faced by TCCC innovators in developing and implementing TCCC’s novel approach to saving lives on the battlefield. TCCC has now been adopted as the standard for battlefield trauma care by the U.S. Military and by many other countries around the world. TCCC concepts are now gradually being transitioned into Emergency Medical Systems in the civilian world and are helping to save lives there as well.

Shishir Shakya, Alicia Plemmons, and Conor Norris recently published a study on the licensing of military spouses, studying changes in licensing reforms at the state-level to understand the effect on employment and the barriers to continuous employment. The full scope of the barriers spouses face while needing to relocate may not be captured within data analysis, but in this study focusing in on nurses specifically, Shakya et al. find a significant 12% probability that a registered nurse will move near an army base and continue working rather than leaving the labor market in the wake of a state's full licensing recognition policy for military spouses. This builds evidence of what policies are helping ease this transition and inform best policymaking practices for military families. Find their paper here: https://lnkd.in/edU49-z4

STABILIZING AND IMPROVING OUR MILITARY HEALTH SYSTEM Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hick recently issued a significant directive that is worth the time to read. From the directive: “...After extensive study, senior leadership determined the most effective way to take care of our people, support the National Defense Strategy, increase clinical readiness, mitigate risks to requirements, and reduce long-term cost growth in private sector care is to reattract beneficiaries to MTFs and maximize medical education and training pipelines. However, reattracting care to MTFs and DTFs requires a stable, predictable workforce sufficiently staffed, trained, and routinely available to provide health care to our beneficiaries. Rebuilding medical capabilities and providing increased support to our clinical personnel is critical, but it will take time and focused effort to accomplish while continuing to assure necessary operational medical support. To stabilize and improve readiness, capacity, and access to care for our warfighters and beneficiaries, I direct the following : …” Take a few minutes to read this Directive from DepSecDef.  It lays out the way ahead in addressing, at the senior levels of our DoD, many of our core MHS challenges.
