Centering Intersectionality is this year's Mayor's Summit call to action and also a level of awareness that is highly relevant to social issues. In a 2016 #TEDTalk,  Kimberlé Crenshaw shares, "Without frames that show us how social problems impact ALL members of a targeted group, many will fall through the cracks of our movement, left to suffer isolation." What does this actually mean? Crenshaw states that if we can't see a problem, we can't fix it. If we don't acknowledge intersectionality, we won't consider it when considering employment or social barriers. When a person is impacted by multiple forces - that's intersectionality. Crenshaw relates this to the numerous Black women who have died at the hands of police and are often forgotten. Black women have intersectional identities. Honoring Black Women Through Research and Advocacy with My Soul Sister! I am beyond proud to share my contributions to educational research through My Soul Sister, an organization dedicated to empowering and uplifting Black women. Together, we’ve made strides in advocating for equity, inclusion, and representation in educational spaces. Some key highlights: ✅ Accessibility to Research on Black Women's Educational Experiences – Our work delves deep into the intersectionality of race and gender, shedding light on the challenges Black women face and the strengths they bring to academia and beyond. ✅ Creating Solutions for Equity and Inclusion – Through My Soul Sister, we’re not just identifying systemic barriers but providing actionable strategies to support Black women in educational and professional environments. ✅ Fostering Empowerment Through Community – We believe that true change comes from building strong networks. Our initiatives are centered on creating spaces where Black women can connect, share their stories, and thrive. Womanism centers the experiences and contributions of Black women and it emerged as a response to BIPOC women feeling excluded from the feminist movement. So, what’s prompting more Black and Indigenous women to call themselves feminists? Today’s three panelists- Latanya Mapp, Tarana Burke, and Stephanie A. Kimou shared their relationship with the word. Some powerful takeaways: * Feminism doesn’t have to be yet another movement that we yield to white women. * The people who are asked to give the most grace are usually the people who receive the least amount of grace. * There’s a difference between ambition and being passionate. Ambition is climbing the ladder and being on magazine covers; Passion is how you feel and how you want others to feel. As we discuss Women's History Month, I think we need to talk more about intersectionality. I live in America, so I am Black first. As we decry affirmative action & eliminate DEI roles, let's also remember that the biggest beneficiary of affirmative action is white women. Do we all know this? Do we care? I know I do. Similar to slavery, Black people did the work, but did not receive the benefit. I am exhausted. #diversityequityinclusion #affirmativeaction #womenshistorymonth #intersectionality
