Did you know that the Chinese translation for "socialism (社会主义)" was adopted from the Japanese translation of the concept? In fact, many phrases relating to politics in Chinese were actually loaned from Japanese translations of English terms 🧐 Most entered Chinese in the late 19th and early 20th century when Chinese reformers looked to Japan as a development model to modernize China in the face of foreign threats. At the time, though, the influx of Japanese loanwords was hotly debated. And today, political tensions between the two countries have seen some Chinese brands remove Japanese characters from their names. Milk tea brand Nayuki, for example, removed the Japanese character "の" from its name in 2022. ⚠️ 🍵 Click the link to learn more #Japanese #loanwords in Chinese, and the fascinating history of linguistic influence between China and Japan over the last 100 years. In the Hungarian language, whether written or spoken, names are invariably given in the "Eastern name order", with the family name followed by the given name (in foreign-language texts in languages that use Western name order, names are often given with the family name last). Hungarian is one of the few national languages in Europe to use the Eastern name order, like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Khmer and some Basque nationalists.

Modern Korean is unique in its status as a “Language Isolate”, meaning it has no obvious relationship to nor does it descend from any other language. Today, Korean is spoken by around 82 million people in North and South Korea, and also by diaspora communities in China, Japan, Russia, and the US. Since the division of Korea after the Korean War, the dialects of North and South have become politicised, with South Korea employing political propaganda against the North’s standardised language. One area where the dialects can differ is in loan words, with South Korean dialects borrowing from English, whereas North Korean borrows more from Russian. Lost in Translation? https://lnkd.in/gpsBceKp I have been on occasions been asked if I am ‘中国人’,(Chinese citizen or someone of PRC),and I have replied no, I am Chinese ‘华人’,from Singapore. When media or social uses the word Chinese, the authors usually do not differentiate between the two. These 2 are very different concepts, but the English translation are both "Chinese". I remembered an interview our late Prime Minister Mr Lee said, we are of "ethic Chinese stock". That tells the difference clearly. Important to remember to have with you native speakers during business meetings to ensure as little are lost in translation as possible. A note of clarification: I am sure Singaporean chinese are happy to acknowledge we are "华人", and I am, but we do not like it when someone just assumes when we speak good Mandarin we must from from PRC. Maybe that's our Singaporean pride?
