I’ve started my journey into Mixed Reality Development with Rafty, my submission for the Meta Presence Platform Hack! Taking full advantage of Quest 3’s room scanning, physical furniture must be be put together to generate boats that float in your flooded room. 🎮 Game Flow Rafty takes the spatial data of your room and replaces specific furniture with boat pieces. After confirming that your raft is accurately mapped, the room floods, forcing you to get on top of the raft that you’ve created. A bird named Captain Gully sees your plight, and gives you various tools to interact with your flooded room while you wait for your room to stop flooding. ✍ Takeaways As the Lead Developer of this project, much of my takeaways were technical based. I’ve learned how to utilize Meta’s Building Blocks and SDKs, as well as prototype Spatial UI using Figma and integrating them using Bezi. But, I’ve also learned more about the importance of user testing for Mixed Reality projects. Some unique interactions and safety considerations would never have made it to this prototype without the valuable feedback we received along the way! 💡 Final Thoughts It’s amazing how far XR development has come when it comes to accessibility! Despite being a group of all designers, we were able to create a working prototype and then flesh it out to make it look more polished. I’ll be playing more with Meta's SDKs this summer to see what other ways Mixed Reality could enhance our lives.
