The New Mexico Children’s Foundation (NMCF) provides funding to small, community-based nonprofit programs designed to foster the physical, emotional, educational, and social development of New Mexico’s children and their families. This granting cycle, NMCF is prioritizing funding for programs that help to address and support social and emotional development and diminish barriers to educational opportunities and literacy attainment. New Mexican 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that serve children and have annual total budgets under $400,000 are eligible to apply. Priority is on, but not limited to, rural New Mexican community programs addressing unmet needs for children 18 or younger. Organizations may request support for a new or existing program serving an unmet need, as well as for operating expenses. I have been serving young leaders for almost 30 years! One of my greatest challenges has been to find powerful, simple and effective tools that help me coach and mentor them. Well... I've found one that promises to be nothing short of transformational. I'm blessed to be involved in supporting a unique non-profit over the last few years called SetPath (www.setpath.org) Did you know: - Nearly 1 in 3 Gen Z young adults feel utterly alone most of the time.  - Less than 50% of Gen Z Americans are thriving in their lives — among the lowest across all generations in the U.S. today, and a much lower rate than millennials at the same age. - Members of Gen Z who have an adult encouraging them to pursue their goals and dreams are more than twice as likely as those without to agree they have a great future ahead and will reach their goals. As a Director on SetPath's Board, I am personally invested in SetPath's mission to guide young adults to discover purpose, hope, and direction through Life Planning and mentorship. Originally from Philadelphia, I now reside in southern Maryland. With a distinguished career encompassing 9 years as a social worker, 7 years as an educator, 11 years as a children’s librarian, and 6 years dedicated to nonprofit service for children, I have consistently championed the welfare of all children. In 2018 (official in 2019) , I resolutely addressed the school-to-prison pipeline, a systemic issue intricately linked to poverty and the nation’s crisis of low literacy rates. This crisis, exacerbated by a lack of empathy and understanding within schools, disproportionately affects students of color. This article deeply resonates with me. As a prekindergarten teacher, home visits and family engagement were critical pieces of the puzzle for success in my classroom. In another job along the way, a family engagement program was phased out of strategy because outcomes couldn't be measured. (I now know we can - and should - ask colleagues and funders to consider how to better gather strong data on program effectiveness.) And more recently, I have seen evidence of the effectiveness of programs like Save the Children US's Early Steps to School Success. Thanks, Ambika Kapur, Stephanie Sharp & Overdeck Family Foundation, for sharing this important perspective and making the case for philanthropic investment in family engagement programs. Indeed, they are now more important than ever. "Without family involvement, many recent philanthropic investments, especially those focused on closing pandemic-induced learning gaps, will fail to meet their potential. Tutoring doesn’t work if families don’t recognize their children need it. Introducing a new evidence-based math curriculum won’t achieve the intended results if families don’t know about it and don’t understand how to help their kids at home. And offering summer programs and an extended school year won’t help children who are behind if families don’t sign them up. Parents and caregivers want to help their children succeed. We just need to give them the tools to make sure that happens."

You know, there’s a huge trend on social media these days that talks about girl/boy math? (if you’re not a big scroller, one example of so-called ‘girl math’ is that Taylor Swift concert tickets bought in advance are free by the time said concert rolls around). Several creators have included the variables of mom math. Aka the math you do before going out the door in the morning with a baby, a toddler, and a preteen in tow. I’m sure many of you know the drill… what each child needs to eat when each child has to wash when each child has to wake up to make it happen which exact order of tasks is needed to make sure everyone is ready on time (or at least a timeline that leaves you with 30 minutes to arrive at a destination that’s actually 45 minutes away) It’s an impossible equation. But there is another kind of mom math that many women in Africa are facing daily... Having to choose which of their children, if any, can attend school (and stay in school). As a mother, I cannot imagine having to make that decision. Having to keep my kids home to help make money and keep up the household... Having to choose between feeding my children and offering them a future. When families lack the income for food, transportation, school fees, uniforms, and other essentials, girls are the first who end up dropping out of school. The number of girls (of primary & and secondary school age) in Sub-Saharan Africa who are out of school is almost equal to… … 10% of the entire US population (based on the US Census Bureau). That is 32.8 million girls who are not getting equal access to education. Girls are left wishing to learn and go to school from the sidelines.
