Youth, Power, Action! As a Member of Amnesty International Global Youth Collective, I recently participated in the Mid-Term Review of the Global Children and Youth Strategy 2022-2025, and it was an incredible opportunity to engage with passionate youth from around the world. As a member of Amnesty’s Global Youth Collective, I had the chance to: 🔹 Reflect on the impact of the strategy so far, identifying what has worked well and where we can improve to better serve young activists. 🔹 Share ideas on how to prioritize youth participation, ensuring that our voices remain at the heart of Amnesty’s work. 🔹 Dive into crucial topics, including: Youth leadership and its transformative potential. The wellbeing and mental health of child and youth activists. Embracing and amplifying diversity in youth movements. Building meaningful partnerships with children and youth activists worldwide. The discussions were both inspiring and action-oriented, focusing on how we can create a more inclusive, supportive, and impactful space for young people within Amnesty. A special thanks to the Global Children and Youth Team for their updates, insights, and the collaborative spirit that made this session so productive. Together, we’re shaping the future of human rights advocacy by empowering youth as leaders, changemakers, and allies.

Over the past 3 months, 10 young leaders from around the world—from Australia to Zimbabwe—have conducted intensive research to address key questions: 🔍 How can youth-led initiatives be effectively resourced? 💡 What funding strategies can ensure the longevity of these initiatives? 📊 How can we accurately measure their impact and sustainability? The findings reveal that re-granting models and equitable approaches to philanthropy are transformative for youth-led organizations. There are over 518,000 public offices nationwide; women hold less than one-third of them. There are so many opportunities to get involved, whether as a candidate or senior-level political staff. I have always had a profound interest in equity and social justice. Raised by activists who instilled in me the belief in equality, I never let my gender define my capabilities. Embracing diversity, I learned to value individuals for who they are without prejudice towards gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or other factors. In higher education, we continue to focus fundraising efforts on males. Let's pause and think about the impact of women in philanthropy. Since 1985, Chicago Foundation for Women (CFW) has been a leader in the movement to achieve basic rights and equal opportunities, investing in women and girls as catalysts building stronger communities for all. Today, more than 37 years later, CFW continues to be the only organization in the region to take a comprehensive approach to understand and address the issues impacting Chicago-area women and girls. CFW works with a community of socially-minded investors who share our passion for improving the lives of women and girls, ensuring that every dollar they give achieves maximum impact. Thanks to these partners, CFW invests in the future of emerging organizations through leadership development and support in building sustainable nonprofit infrastructure. As a result, two-thirds of nonprofits for which CFW was the first institutional or ‘seed’ funder are still thriving 10 years after receiving their first CFW grant. Chicago Foundation for Women has invested more than $45 million through over 4,000 grants, annually impacting 226,000 women, girls, trans, and gender nonbinary individuals across the Chicago region, so they are healthy, safe, and economically secure. Nearly four decades later, CFW continues to be the only organization in the region to take a comprehensive approach to understand and address the issues impacting Chicago-area women, girls, trans, and gender nonbinary individuals. The Global Opportunity Youth Network - GOYN Bogotá reports that over 854,000 young people face significant barriers, from job instability to family pressures—challenges that often fall hardest on women. Our JuventudES program is designed to empower vulnerable young adults aged 16-29 by equipping them with essential job skills, connecting them with potential employers, and linking them to educational opportunities. Through a curriculum featuring 32 Passport to Success® lessons, technical training, and personalized counseling, JuventudES enables young people to build a foundation for a brighter future. Since 2022, JuventudES has impacted 1,966 young people, with over 57% securing employment and more than 72% pursuing further education. States and Territories across Australia are celebrating National Youth Week! A time to elevate young people and give power to their voices. The Federal Government’s new youth engagement strategy, ‘Engage!’, sets out a vision for a future where young people are empowered, valued, and contribute to government decision making. From this strategy, we know that young people see housing affordability, rent and homeownership as critical issues in their lives. Here at YWCA Australia, we recognise the importance of amplifying the voices of young people on the issues that impact them. Young women and gender diverse people’s leadership is core to our work, and we strive to create spaces where young people can shape their future to make safe, secure and affordable housing a reality. I remember when Hillary Clinton lost the election. I’d been to a fancy dress party the night after it was declared. I’d pushed the boat out and hired a Game of Thrones style costume from Angels, complete with breast plate and fake sword.  I remember sobbing at 11 pm in the middle of Piccadilly Circus in the pouring rain, looking bedraggled in my full length regalia, as the full realisation hit me. I’ve never felt less of a warrior than I did that night. As someone who grew up in a family where misogyny ruled (and I mean ruled), I knew what this meant for women. Like so many of us, I woke up this morning in a momentary state of shock. I say momentary, because that was how long it took to remember how low down the pecking order the rights and needs of women are. Of course, this result affects so many others too, but it is women and girls who will bear the brunt. This will be quoted a lot on here today, but we only need to look at the research by Rosa to see how pitiful the level of funding is for the women and girls sector. Just 1.8% of all grants. Yet why is this so? I raised this exact question with my thesis interviewees and answers ranged from ‘because women don’t matter’ to questioning the validity of the data by saying that higher education funding - one of the largest areas for major gifts - benefited both men and women equally.  One respondent grimly noted that donkey sanctuaries received more financial support than the entire VAWG sector. What is clear today is that the ethic of care – which has taken such a hammering – needs to grow a stronger shield.  We should be funding women and girls causes because they matter. There needs to be no other reason. Because we will see where making choices simply from a position of economics, growth and sovereignty takes us. #Philanthropy #VAWG #WomenPhilanthropy
