Mid semester presentation for Melbourne General Cemetery: "Avenues of Evocation" As part of Design Studio 3: Speculations @ the University of Melbourne - Through the strategic removal of hard impermeable surfaces, Melbourne General Cemetery is to reveal new avenues of movement throughout the landscape. As a strategy for evocation of its visitors, these new pathways are to dynamically guide foot traffic across typography, foliage and new permeable surfaces. Furthermore, the removal of hard materials in favour of light-coloured surfaces will aid efforts to minimise the heat island effect present within the cemetery during hot months of the year; reflecting the sun’s rays. This sensitive approach to new topographical, material and vegetation changes across existing roads may inform a heightened sense of belonging for visitors. Additionally, individuals and collectives of lost loved ones may find peace and comfort within these meandering pathways for new shared evocations. @msdsocial

How can I photograph a false ceiling without it crushing me? And even more so, how can I photograph it without crushing the viewer looking at the photo? To begin with, this false ceiling will not crush anyone: the quality of its materials and construction are proven and that will not represent any danger. But if I don't choose the right point of view to photograph it and don't correctly determine how much to raise my camera's tilt-shift lens, then I run the risk of making the visual appearance of the ceiling brown piece so heavy as to be intimidating to the viewer. My intention was then to find a good perspective to make the ceiling look friendly and that its weight had a perfect balance with the rest of the frame. Always in cases like this, I want the space to have a discreet but evident harmony and, in this specific one, I do want the false ceiling to be an elegant presence. If I did not portray it this way and the appearance of the space and the balance of its proportions were neglected, then the false ceiling would collapse in the eyes of the viewer – and I cannot allow that. If the color is not enough, the shape always resolves the frame. Many times we architectural photographers work in almost monochrome spaces, mainly white, in which color only appears in a very subtle way, almost like a sigh. It is in spaces like these that the importance of clearly representing the shape that builds the frame is vital to generating the meaning of the image and, consequently, to ignite the spark of curiosity spark that will attract the viewer's attention. Choosing the right point of view and lens is decisive, but it is even more important to illuminate the space with the precise balance of light and shadow that reveals the shapes as we want to represent them. Each section of this staircase weighs 25 tons and I can photograph it like a colossus or like a feather. I prefer to make it fly like the sail of a ship driven by the wind, but I can't do it if the shadows are not where they must be. Showing that the Orangery’s architecture captures the outdoors. The Orangery at Holland Park is a space defined by its seamless connection to the outside, with vast windows that flood the interior with natural light, creating an inviting atmosphere. Photographing this venue isn’t just about showing its beauty; it’s about capturing how the greenery and sunlight from the park transform the Orangery into an open, inspiring setting. The photography is about showing that the unique connection with the surrounding park turns the space into more than just an event venue—it becomes a living, breathing environment filled with light and nature. This flood of light and nature makes the space ideal not only for events but also for creative installations. I had the privilege of photographing Liz Marsh and her team as they crafted a stunning floral installation. These behind-the-scenes photographs add a human element to a series of images about the space at the Orangery. Featuring people in action within the space helps potential clients of the venue envision how it can be utilised, allowing them to easily imagine their own events or installations coming to life. Preliminary consultations before any work is performed aids in creating a vision as Canning and our clients work toward a design that benefits the sacred space at the completion of each liturgical project. Canning begins with a complete assessment of all conditions, leading to determining the overall design, which may include commissioned artwork. For this project, the conditions assessment showed complete damage to the sanctuary walls and arch patterns, prompting the commissioned artwork pictured here to be crafted. This original pattern was found in historical photographs - matching other patterns in the space. Canning artisans performed this commissioned artwork on canvas in-studio, then installed onsite once completed. #commissionedart #commissionedartwork #decorativedesign #liturgicaldesign #churchdesign #preconstructionconsultation #liturgicalconsultation #liturgicaldesignconsultation #divinedesign #sanctuarydesign #historicaldesign #sacredspace #sacredspaces #sacredplace #sacredplaces #churchrestoration #restoration #conservation #preservation #perfectingpreservation #conditionsassessment

Snippets from a day I won’t forget in a hurry… “Heartwood” Heartwood is a sculptural reflection of nature. As a tree ages, new rings of sapwood are grown, protecting the inner heartwood from decay. In return, the redundant inner cells create a strong structural pillar, giving strength as it grows in its search for more light. When a tree falls and splits open, its inner core is revealed. The heartwood. Ripped from protection; vulnerable and weak, the tree begins to die. However even in this fading state, nature finds a purpose. Plants, moss, and living organisms begin to thrive on the heartwood, bringing a new purpose to the meaning of this core. Walk through our design, the nooks and crevices see the beginnings of new life and the heartwood has become host to the best of the season’s British blooms! Heartwood brings a message of hope through its natural, hand-crafted, sculptural design. How a broken pillar of strength with no hope can be a vessel for other parts of nature to thrive. It also focuses on the value of nature and the strength and intelligence of plants. The floral element of this design, a combination of British grown florals and plants, focuses on a pastel colour palette .The simplicity and tranquility of the tones reflect the beauty and bring a fresh, modern feel. Métis Beadwork + Fiber Artist, New to Graphic Recording/Facilitation - Interested in supporting teams actively working on education and advocacy in relation to Conservation, Species at Risk, and Bio Design. 🌿
A new ‘topographic drawing’ inspired design. Topographical plans and maps are drawings that show the main physical features on the ground, such as roads, rivers, lakes and forests, as well as the changes in elevation between landforms such as valleys and hills (called vertical relief). 🗺️ 📍🌊🌳🛣️ The single colour line art is a bit of a departure from more familiar traditional beadwork styles but I love the effect it creates paired with this textured fabric. Still deciding if and how I should frame this style of work if I choose to offer similar pieces through my shop or local markets. 🌿 Capturing Abstract Beauty from Above 🌿 We live for those moments when inspiration strikes unexpectedly. Today, while observing a drone photography session with DYA Architect we were mesmerized by the intricate dance of lines and shapes on a roofscape, juxtaposed against a lush green patch of grass below. There's something truly magical about viewing the world from a different perspective, especially when it reveals unexpected beauty. The abstract compositions formed by the geometric patterns of the metal rooftops against the organic flow of nature below sparked our imaginations and left us in awe of the creative possibilities that surround us every day. It's moments like these that remind us of the power of observation and the endless potential for inspiration that exists in our surroundings. As #architects, #designers, #artists, and #creators, let's continue to seek out these moments of beauty and let them fuel our creative endeavors. . . . #green #greenarchitecture #greendesign #clq
