Art on the Move 🎭 #1 The Power of Repetition in Theatre Who sits still in a theatre class? And why should anyone? Theatre is an art that moves. It moves your body, emotions, thoughts, and the space around you. To keep my theatre classes dynamic, I begin each session with a game. These games focus on various aspects of communication—both verbal and non-verbal—emotions, speech, language, and memory. A few of my favorites are the "passing on emotion", “Building up the tower of names of fruits/actors/ vehicles, and “Spider web of names” to focus on the memory. I often hear school drama teachers complain about students not memorizing their lines. But why force memorization when you can focus on understanding the story and teach them to improvise? Understanding the story's requirements can be just as effective. However, memorizing lines is still important to be prepared for the unexpected, such as when a main actor falls ill. To help students get the hang of memorizing lines, I use a simple yet effective game that employs the repetition technique. Benefits of the Repetition Technique The repetition technique helps student actors connect with each other. By spontaneously repeating lines, they get their head and heart into the moment. This technique not only encodes information into memory but also helps actors structure the emotions they need to deliver. This is one of the reasons why we have rehearsals. Repetition aids in future recall. Personally, I love recalling and singing the Gujarati poems I learned in my early years. In theatre classes, repetition ensures that students do not need to delve deeply into emotional memory every time to deliver their best performance. Once they are familiar with an expression, they can rely on memorization rather than constantly tapping into emotional memory. Though some may prefer emotional memory techniques, I find that repetition and memorization are more practical and reliable for young actors. Incorporating repetition techniques in theatre classes not only enhances memorization but also fosters a deeper connection between actors. So, let’s keep the art of theatre moving! Beyond Dance and Drama🎭🎥 "School is scam!" Those were the words that slipped from my lips during a conversation with my project supervisor. A little back story. Upon submitting my final project, my supervisor casually asked, "So, when will you start your masters?" To my surprise, I haven't thought about it, I was not eager to return to the “class” after all the hurdles and stress I'd already overcome. "I want to work first, maybe think about masters later," I replied. That's when he gestured for me to take a seat and questioned my reluctance. I bluntly declared, "School is scam. Nobody uses their certificate anymore, especially not someone like me who studied theatre arts." Curious, he asked about my parents' occupations. As I confirmed that they indeed used their certificates as a means of likelihood, he smiled knowingly. "There's no course of study that is absolutely useless," he affirmed. "Whether you realize it or not, your education will prove valuable in unexpected ways." Whenever I mention my theatre arts background, I'm met with raised eyebrows and “oh, so you know how to dance” “can you act”. I remember when a colleague of mine asked for a pen in the faculty and someone blurted out, "Do theatre artists write?" Contrary to popular belief, theatre arts encompass far more than dance, drama, and music. It's as if the course doesn't have any other relevance except in entertainment, which is wrong. Theatre arts is an all-round course that nurtures skills such as: ➡️Administration ➡️Management ➡️Leadership ➡️Effective communication ➡️Creative problem-solving ➡️Team collaboration ➡️Adaptability ➡️Time management ➡️Attention to detail In the coming days, I'll be shedding light on these hidden skills I've acquired through theatre. I'll be sharing personal experiences about each of the skills and how it has helped me. It's a truly enriching course that deserves recognition beyond its stereotypes. Stay tuned as I unveil the untold skills nurtured within the realm of theatre. 🎬 Share in the comments section any common misconceptions you've encountered about theatre. Let's debunk the myths together! #TheatreArts #SkillsDevelopment #EducationBeyondTheatre #writing #VirtualAssistant

Theatre Nurtures Emotional Intelligence Celebrating National Arts in Education Week. Highlighting the importance of Theater and Theater Education. Theatre offers a unique and enriching environment for developing emotional intelligence, which is crucial for fostering empathy, understanding, and interpersonal skills. In theater, youth delve into a range of emotions by portraying diverse characters. This process helps them identify, understand, and express their own feelings as well as recognize and relate to the emotions of others. Analyzing scripts requires youth to interpret characters' motivations, conflicts, and emotional arcs. This deepens their understanding of how emotions drive behavior and decisions, enhancing their ability to empathize with different perspectives. Improvisational activities in theater encourage youth to respond spontaneously to various emotional cues and situations. This helps them practice emotional regulation and adaptability, and improves their ability to connect with others in real-time. By embodying characters from different backgrounds and experiences, youth gain insights into lives and challenges beyond their own. This fosters a deeper empathy and appreciation for the diverse experiences of others. Theatre encourages youth to express their emotions through dialogue, movement, and performance. Learning to articulate and manage emotions constructively enhances their emotional intelligence and self-awareness. Receiving and providing feedback in theater requires youth to reflect on their emotional responses and those of their peers. This reflective practice helps them understand how their actions impact others and develop greater emotional insight. Working closely with others in theater projects involves navigating different personalities and emotional dynamics. This experience teaches youth how to handle interpersonal relationships with sensitivity and care. Theater often involves resolving conflicts—whether in rehearsal dynamics or character interactions. Learning to address and resolve conflicts effectively enhances youth's emotional intelligence and problem-solving skills. The process of performing and reflecting on their work helps youth become more aware of their own emotional responses and triggers. This self-awareness is a key component of emotional intelligence. By engaging in these theater activities, youth develop a nuanced understanding of their own emotions and those of others, fostering empathy, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills. These qualities not only enrich their theatrical experiences but also prepare them to navigate relationships and challenges with greater emotional intelligence in their personal and future professional lives. #Theater #TheaterEducation #Education #ArtEducation #TheaterLife #Actors #Directors #Play #Playwright #FocusOnEducation #Anacostia #Arts #Culture #DMVArts @TheDCArts #DCArts #DCArtists

I had the pleasure of attending a workshop with Datta Patil and Sachin Shinde on September 23, 2024. Their extensive experience in writing and directing theatre truly inspired us all. The session began with Sachin guiding us through a few body relaxation exercises. Initially, I found myself puzzled about how this related to theatre and the purpose of these exercises in a workshop. Afterward, we played an engaging game that involved pairs exploring the area, with one partner blindfolded. The twist was that the sighted individual could only guide their partner through touch, without using any verbal cues. It was exhilarating! By the midpoint of the workshop, I began to realize just how crucial it is for a theatre artist to possess control over their body. Directing a play or telling a story ultimately starts with our breath, our physical presence, and our thoughts—it was a revelation. Next, we closed our eyes for a different activity in which we were invited to envision our dream destination, our ideal companion, and the most sorrowful moment in our lives. As they played a haunting melody in the background, we were drawn deeper into our reflections. Many participants shared their thoughts, and it felt as though we were all unveiling the struggles that had shaped us, the energy we had mustered to arrive at who we are today. As a budding theatre artist, it gave me goosebumps to realize that despite everything we've endured, the artist within us endures and thrives. We find ways to create our stories, shaping them in ways that resonate with others. Datta Patil shared his wealth of experience, and while I expected him to teach us explicit techniques for writing or directing, he simply advised, "Write what you want, whenever you want." You'll discover your own unique style. Sachin echoed this sentiment while leading the session, encouraging us to "act however you wish, and don't overthink it." Hearing these two remarkable individuals emphasize the importance of freedom in theatre, of releasing our mental constraints, had a profound impact on me. Theatre is not just enjoyable; it's become an addiction for me. Learning these foundational aspects of theatre has deepened my passion for the art. I can’t imagine ever giving up on writing and acting. #writing #acting #workshop #datta_patil #sachin_shinde #ihc #altamas_hall #theatre #creator

Theatre Improves Communication Skills Celebrating National Arts in Education Week. Highlighting the importance of Theater and Theater Education. Theatre provides an excellent platform for youth to develop and refine their verbal and nonverbal communication skills. In rehearsals, youth practice and perfect their dialogue and stage presence. This repetition helps them become more articulate and confident in their verbal communication, learning to convey their message clearly and persuasively. Performing in front of an audience teaches youth to project their voice, use appropriate tone and pace, and engage listeners. They also learn to handle performance anxiety and communicate effectively under pressure. Theater classes often include exercises in voice modulation, diction, and body language, which are essential components of effective communication. Through these classes, youth gain a deeper understanding of how to use their voice and body to enhance their message.Receiving and giving constructive feedback in theater helps youth articulate their thoughts and provide meaningful critiques. This process enhances their ability to communicate feedback diplomatically and accept it graciously. Improvisational exercises require youth to think on their feet and respond quickly, honing their ability to communicate spontaneously and adapt their message in real time. Working with peers and instructors on a theatrical project fosters teamwork and negotiation skills. Youth learn to express their ideas, listen actively, and collaborate effectively to achieve a common goal. Embodying different characters helps youth understand and use nonverbal communication—such as gestures, facial expressions, and body language—more effectively. This skill translates into better interpersonal interactions both on and off the stage. Theater teaches youth to express and manage their emotions constructively, which enhances their ability to communicate feelings and intentions more clearly and empathetically. The skills developed through theater extend well beyond the stage, equipping youth with the tools to communicate more effectively in a variety of personal and professional settings. Theatre & Learning and development Last evening, my theatre group and I (I am a practising and performing theatre actor as a part time hobby) put up a play - a set of monologues based on the 9 emotions or the Indian Navarasas. The roles I played were completely contrary to who I am as a person. I had to experience fear and emote it on stage, but not in the way I normally experience it; rather I had to play it how an introverted, graceful and much older person would experience and portray it. I had to experience joy and emote it on stage as someone who was completely socially awkward. To say it was a challenge is an understatement. But it was extremely fulfilling. Theatre, just like all powerful art forms do, has taught me empathy, being comfortable in my own skin, new perspectives, creative style, adaptability, courage, reading a room, learning to take feedback with grace, communicating with ease, non verbal communication, leadership, teamwork, flexibility, spontaneity etc. - like nothing else ever has before. Being an L&OD professional, I often try to bring in theatre techniques to teaching concepts of communication, empathy, trust, leadership etc. I am no expert, and I am aware that there are so many more things being done by more qualified experts in this space. I thought I would reach out to my LinkedIn family to know more from anyone working in this space and learn about what else you do. Please do DM if you have successfully taught L&D topics using theatre techniques. I would be grateful to have a chat and explore. Ps: Picture is of me with my favourite transformer; just to bring some joy to this post exploring personal transformations :) #Mondaymusings #learninganddevelopment #leadership #teamwork #theatre #creativity
