Let’s get more people walking more often! Our vision is to see more people walking for transport, and more people walking for recreation. Wellbeing SA is a great supporter of Walking SA so we thought we'd share some quick facts from Wellbeing SA’s South Australian Walking Strategy 2022-2032. * In a week, 15% of South Australian adults aged 18-64 yrs, do moderate vigorous physical activities, 21% do 1-149 minutes, and 65% do at least 150 mins. (1) * 88% of South Australian adults had participated in a walking activity during the last 12 months, 82% had participated in the last week, however, only 43% had participated in 150 minutes or more during the week. (2) Obviously, Walking SA supports South Australian Walking Strategy and we share it's goals to: * Realise co-benefits for all State Government stakeholders who are delivering on the walking agenda * Create efficiencies when working across government by establishing a clear set of actions and by sharing resources and data * Assist stakeholders in sharing knowledge and the understanding behind delivering on the walking agenda, making it easier to build the case for walking projects and initiatives * Enable the evaluation and coordination of existing initiatives through the collection and use of data * Continue to put a walking lens on major transport projects, infill and new developments in South Australia * Contribute to building sustainable living environments that prioritise the health, wellbeing and safety of all South Australians. Walking SA is a strong vocal advocate, and responds to current walking issues raised by our supporters, members and partners. We contribute to change through submissions, letters, media, meetings, projects, partnerships, presentations, and encouraging others to take up our asks and to make a change. Walking SA is invited onto government and non-government advisory groups and working groups and contributes our expertise around walking in many different forums. Who knew there was actually a day to celebrate winter walks? Typically coinciding with the holiday season, the Winter Walks Festival unfolds with organized walks on various dates in December and January and provides the opportunity to get outside, embracing the enchantment of winter scenery and relishing the benefits of outdoor activity. The Winter Walks Festival this year is on December 20th and is an annual celebration, encouraging people to immerse themselves in the serene charm of winter landscapes. This event inspires people to take time out of their busy schedules, invest in themselves and helps to refocus. Physical activity has a huge potential to enhance our well-being. Even a short burst of 10 minutes of brisk walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood. Taking part in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety. Here are some ways to get involved: Plan to get out with family or friends and visit a nearby nature trail, park, woodland or my favourite, living near the sea, is a coastal walk. It doesn’t have to be long, a 20 -30 minute walk would do you the power of good. Explore around you and make the most of what is on your doorstep. Stay Cozy: Wrap up warm, don comfortable boots, and take along a hot chocolate, I’m not promoting it, but if you’re not the driver, why not whack in a little Baileys or Brandy in to your hot drink! Take some snacks for a pit stop while taking in the scenery. Birdwatching: Winter proves to be an opportune time for birdwatching, as many bird species are more easily spotted without the foliage of spring and summer. Photography: Capture the moment and share your photos to inspire others. Here are some of my snaphots this Winter. #WinterWalks #FestivalOfWinterWalks #NatureExploration #WinterWonderland #OutdoorAdventure #StayActive

Father's Day is a time to honor and appreciate the fathers and father figures in our lives. This year, why not celebrate in a way that also honors the environment? Here are some ideas to make Father's Day special while giving back to the planet: 1. Plant a Tree Together: Trees are vital to our ecosystem, providing oxygen, improving air quality, and supporting wildlife. Planting a tree is a meaningful activity that you can enjoy with your dad, creating a lasting legacy that will grow for generations. 2. Go on a Nature Walk: Spend quality time with your father by exploring a local park or nature reserve. Not only is this a great way to bond, but it also allows you to appreciate the beauty of the natural world and understand the importance of preserving it. 3. Build a Birdhouse: Engage in a hands-on project that supports local wildlife. Building a birdhouse together is a fun and educational activity that helps provide shelter for birds and encourages biodiversity in your area. 4. Cook a Sustainable Meal: Prepare a special meal for your dad using locally sourced, organic ingredients. Discuss the benefits of sustainable food choices and how they contribute to a healthier planet. 5. Volunteer for an Environmental Cause: Spend the day volunteering for a local environmental organization. Whether it’s a beach cleanup, tree planting event, or community garden project, giving back to the environment is a rewarding way to celebrate Father’s Day. 6. Gift Eco-Friendly Products: Show your love and appreciation with gifts that are kind to the earth. Consider items like reusable water bottles, solar-powered gadgets, or clothing made from sustainable materials. This Father’s Day, let’s honor our dads and father figures by taking steps to protect and preserve the environment. By incorporating eco-friendly activities and gifts into our celebrations, we can create lasting memories and a positive impact on our planet. Happy Father’s Day! 🌳💚 #Happyfathersday Diana Achieng Phelix Nyadida

Picture this: Nature decided to host its own Occupy Beach movement in Monterey, California, and the new protesters are sea lions. City officials quickly rolled out the literal red carpet—or rather, yellow caution tape—giving the marine community exclusive beach rights. Imagine if humans got shadowbanned from their favorite social media channel. Mortified? Amused? Undoubtedly, you'd be asking awkward questions and making fascinating assumptions. Are these sea lions demanding better fish prices or merely taking a well-deserved vacation at what humans like to call our beach ? So, are the sea lions here to stay, staging a coup d'état over beachfront property? It’s as mesmerizing as it is aquatic. They’ve pulled a classic move from the encyclopedia of nature’s gritty humor: reclaiming their territory in the most delightful get off my lawn fashion. It's hard not to think of the deeper, existential dilemma. We rushed to build concrete paradises, and here come the pinnipeds, gracefully reminding us about our shared realm’s ancient owners. What do we see in this marine mass protest—an omen? A festival? Or maybe just karma strumming its age-old tune on our actions' repercussions? While some skeptics may speculate this is a foretelling of Mother Earth’s slow revenge, others merely giggle at the epic human inconvenience. The tune of balancing territorial coexistence between Homo sapiens and Zalophus californianus rings in the echo chamber of social consciousness. Maybe we’re just squatting on borrowed land, and nature called “rent’s due, folks.” These surprising events leave us gazing nostalgically at a bigger picture. Remember that sweet, almost romantic vision of serene oceans granted dominion, minus loud motorboats and selfie sticks. I dare say - melancholic? Bitter-sweet? Wholeheartedly a glimpse into paradise lost, then found, lived in by curious eyes again. By giving the sandy real estate entirely to flippered interlopers for a short while, perhaps we’ve inadvertently handed the planet back its poetic justice. For now, let us marvel at Space Santa Monica's buoyant tenants practicing social distance long before it became trendy. Your turn starts when they check out, so perhaps it’s best to regard them like royalty. Would it be so far-fetched to think of outdoor adventures spiced with a healthy dose of newfound respect? Brace for the impending influx of “Visit Monterey—for the sea lions” posts. Who loses in this unexpected, heartwarming saga? Certainly not the Instagram feeds. In the end, we may see this temporary beach eviction grow into conscious stewardship. Think possibility shrouded in sandy fur and whiskers, a subtle reminder of a simpler coexistence we could aspire to. Swaying tides of harmony could flow as effortlessly—if we embrace, understand, occasionally step aside. - #OccupyBeach - #MarineManifesto - #SeaLionTakeover - #NatureReclaims - #BeachOdds - #EcologicalHarmony https://lnkd.in/emdgfXDV

Continuing my December focus on ‘National days’ this one has been borrowed from our friends across the pond, but it’s topical so we will go with it. Today (in the States!) is national look for an evergreen day. It was created by the National Arborist Association to raise awareness of the importance of evergreen trees and to encourage people to enjoy and appreciate their beauty. Evergreen trees are a symbol of resilience and hope. They stay green all year round, even in the depths of winter. This is because evergreen trees have a special waxy coating on their needles or leaves that helps to protect them from the cold and snow. Evergreen trees play an important role in the environment. They provide food and shelter for many different animals. They also help to clean the air and water. So, on national look for an evergreen day, lets discuss one of my favourite things about December… the Christmas tree. Here are some fun facts about Christmas tree’s this side of the pond: 🎄The tradition of Christmas trees dates back to 1790’s in Germany, when King George III was on the throne. 🎄The most popular Christmas tree species are the Nordmann fir and the Norway spruce. 🎄Around 6-8 million Christmas trees are sold each year. 🎄More than 90% of Christmas trees sold are grown domestically. 🎄The UK Christmas tree industry is worth approx. £384 million per year. 🎄Perhaps the most famous Christmas tree in the country is the one in London’s Trafalgar Square; it has been a gift from Norway since 1947. I love a real Christmas tree and wouldn’t even consider an artificial one. For me it starts with the family tradition of going together to choose one. I love the natural beauty of having such a big tree in the house! The gorgeous smell of the needles filling the house is Christmas personified for me. The fact that buying one from our local Christmas tree farm is supporting a local business is an added bonus as a small business owner myself. I know it’s a controversial one, but I am interested… Do you have a real tree or an artificial one? #learninganddevelopment #talentmanagement #peopledevelopment

As we head into Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer, it’s crucial to prioritize the safety of our kids while they enjoy the season’s festivities. 🌞 With the promise of sunny days, pool parties, and outdoor adventures, summer brings countless opportunities for fun. However, ensuring that our children stay safe during these activities is essential. First and foremost, protecting kids from the sun’s harmful rays is vital. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, dressing them in light, loose-fitting clothing, and encouraging them to play in the shade can prevent painful sunburns and reduce the risk of long-term skin damage. Hydration is equally important—keeping water on hand and encouraging regular sips can help prevent dehydration, especially during active play in the heat. Water safety is another critical aspect to consider. Whether they’re swimming in a pool, lake, or at the beach, always supervise children closely and ensure they understand basic water safety rules. Using life jackets for younger kids or those who are not strong swimmers can provide an extra layer of protection. Additionally, with the increase in outdoor play, protecting against insect bites and ensuring safe biking and playground practices can prevent accidents and discomfort. Lastly, with temperatures rising, it’s essential to monitor for signs of heat exhaustion and limit strenuous activities during extreme heat. Planning for indoor activities or visiting air-conditioned places can offer a cool break from the summer sun. By taking these precautions, we can ensure that our kids have a safe and enjoyable summer, filled with fun memories. Let’s make this Memorial Day weekend the start of a happy, healthy summer for everyone! 🇺🇸🌊 #SummerSafety #KidsSafety #MemorialDayWeekend #HealthyKids #SafeSummer #ParentingTips #encouragekids
