This week is Mental Health Awareness Week and we want to take the opportunity to spotlight mental health. We hosted an insightful panel discussion last week between Sarah Kendrick, Clinical Director at Mental Health Innovations and two of our Shout Volunteers Amelia and Chris on the practical steps you can take to start a conversation about suicide. Changing the narrative begins with breaking down the stigma and not being afraid to ask questions, and our panellists shared some thoughtful insights on how their training as Shout Volunteers has helped them have practical conversations with their wider communities too. Top things discussed included: 🔹 Remembering you don’t have to be an expert. Anyone can help prevent suicide. 🔹 Talking about suicide doesn’t make it happen. You can never do the wrong thing by asking someone if they are ok and giving them the space they need to be listened to. 🔹 Understanding that you don’t have to have all the solutions. Just be there to listen and validate their thoughts and feelings. Sometimes it can be hard to know how to start the conversation, but as Shout volunteer Chris said, sometimes you can help someone feel at ease to open up by taking a walk side by side to create comfort in a way that sitting down face to face might not. Our mental health text service Shout offers free, confidential, anonymous support over text, giving people the space they need to talk in a way that feels comfortable to them. 🌅 The Sunrise Challenge is a fun and simple fundraising event to support CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health), helping to support the work CAMH is doing to find new solutions to the most complex issues in mental health. Now entering its 4th year, the CAMH Sunrise Challenge has raised over $4.7 million to fuel research breakthroughs, accelerate the pace of discovery, and show people with mental illness that they're not alone. To my fellow mental health clinicians supporting clients dealing with the immense challenge of balancing work and war, please consider these nuanced approaches: 1-"Limit your exposure to the news" may not be realistic for those deeply worried about their loved ones, homeland, and safety. Instead, suggest: "Set an evening cut-off time for consuming news to protect your sleep." Reassure them that they can catch up in the morning, and crucial updates will reach them as needed. 2- "Stay away from social media; everyone is posting the same thing" may not be effective for clients who need to check on the wellbeing of their loved ones. A more supportive approach is: "Designate specific times during the day to check in on family and friends, as well as get updates. This helps maintain balance between your responsibilities and staying informed, without feeling overwhelmed." 3- "Don’t feel guilty" can feel dismissive when clients are witnessing extreme destruction and human suffering. Instead, try: "Channel your energy into helping—whether through fundraising, donations, or offering emotional and community support."
