🎓 𝗧𝗼 𝗣𝗵𝗗 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗵𝗗? 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟭: 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 As graduation nears, I ask myself: "What's next?" As a chemistry master's student, I have noticed a trend: seems like everyone in my field is leaning towards getting a Ph.D. In Germany, around 85% of chemistry graduates pursue a Ph.D. 👨🔬 👩🔬 I've asked around within my chemistry community, uncovering diverse motivations for this choice: 📌 "To complete my academic journey." 📌 "For improved career prospects." 📌 "To have the "Dr." title before my name." 📌 "Due to uncertainty after graduation." 📌 "Driven by passion for my thesis, igniting research interests." ❓ Now, I face two important questions for myself: "Should I pursue further academic studies?' and 'Can I succeed as a chemist without a Ph.D.?" 🔎 On LinkedIn, I'm seeking diverse perspectives from individuals with various backgrounds and career paths. I'm eager to hear your insights! 📝 If there's interest, I'll continue this series, sharing my pros and cons, and exploring alternative paths after completing a Chemistry M.Sc. #PhD #Chemistry #CareerOptions #LinkedInDiscussion

Proud and honored to announce that *in my personal (not FDA) capacity* I will be serving on the Advisory Council for the Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell. I hope to give as much as I gained from my time there during grad school. https://lnkd.in/eHyytNqT ==================== Reflecting on life-changing advice I received: 1. As an undergrad I went to pick up a graded exam from my physical chemistry prof. He picked up my exam from the pile, raised an eyebrow, and asked me to sit down, "Ever considered getting a PhD?" 2. One of the interviewers for an entry-level ChemE position politely ran me down in the hallway, "I don't think you will be happy in this job, or any entry-level job. Have you considered grad school?" 3. I asked my roommate, who had already applied to grad schools, what I needed to do, "Sign up for the GRE because you need to take it by the end of the week!" 4. I met my undergrad academic advisor for a perfunctory meeting. Instead, we had a long conversation about grad school, "You should meet this guy Matt DeLisa from Cornell. Real good guy." Moral: Offer and be open to advice—it can make a big difference.

As someone who didn't quite feel at home in a lab, I turned to Chemical Education Research as an avenue to understand my own career dilemma and enhance the sense of belonging for other students within our Chemistry classes, ultimately leading students towards fulfilling Chemistry-related careers. I've developed a 'Careers in Chemistry' module for Western students, aiming to showcase both traditional and non-traditional chemistry careers that Western Alumni have successfully pursued. This module sheds light on diverse chemistry career options that students might not be familiar with, all with the goal of fostering interest and persistence within the Chemistry field An incorporated research survey holds the potential to uncover strategies to determine what prior knowledge students from first to fourth year have regarding these careers, and what new chemistry career connections have been made. Furthermore, this survey will be a significant tool when understanding how the 'Careers in Chemistry' module can be improved for future Chemistry courses. By bridging the gap between academia and real-world applications, my thesis aims to not only help Chemistry students in navigating their career choices but also contribute to the ongoing conversation fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion in Chemistry learning environments. #Chem4491E #ChemicalEducationResearch #WesternUniversity #CareersinChemistry

Managing Director; Adjunct Faculty; USP Council of Expert; AAPS Fellow; Editor-in-Chief of KENX Insight; GMP/QMS expert.
There is also a certification program on Regulatoty Compliance for those who wants to go to Quality or Regulatory areas. The students from this program are also exceptional since I have the pleasure interacting with many of them. Highly recommended. #pharmaceuticals #quality #qualitymanagement #regulatorycompliance #education
For working chemists that may be interested in pursuing an advanced scientific degree, I highly recommend the M.S. in Analytical Chemistry from I.I.T. (Illinois Tech). The program is available online and can be completed in 2.5-3 years part-time. I was in the inaugural graduating class of the program some 25 years ago (no internet classes back then), and grateful I could get an advanced degree while working full time! Information on the program can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gg-9Tvdr

Chemistry, often called the "central science," bridges the gap between physics and biology, providing the foundational knowledge that drives advancements in medicine, technology, environmental sciences, and more. Students majoring in chemistry are not just diving into a subject—they're immersing themselves in the intricate world of atoms, molecules, and reactions forming our universe's fabric. A chemistry major typically offers several tracks or concentrations to cater to different career and academic goals. The specific tracks and classes can vary by institution but usually include general chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and environmental chemistry. Students often participate in laboratory classes associated with lecture courses, independent research projects, and seminars. A degree in chemistry opens doors to diverse career opportunities. Graduates can pursue roles in pharmaceuticals, where they develop life-saving drugs, or in agrochemistry, ensuring sustainable and efficient food production. There's also forensic chemistry, where professionals solve criminal cases, and cosmetic chemistry, which blends art with science to create beauty products. Chemistry majors can continue their education in graduate, medical, law, and business schools. By applying wisely, building confidence, and getting it right, I help students on their journey to college admission success.
