The recent Grit and Growth podcast featuring Steve Ciesinski's masterclass on "Expanding Globally" struck a profound chord with me. His insights into the impact of local regulatory environments on businesses resonated deeply, mirroring our experiences at Innovarx Global Health in The Gambia. Throughout 2024, we've grappled with regulatory challenges that threaten the very existence of our company. Over the past four years, we've revolutionized healthcare access in The Gambia, providing early and continuous services and safeguarding against counterfeit medications. We identified a significant problem - 4 out of 10 Gambian adults suffer from non-communicable diseases like diabetes or hypertension - and created a product-market fit, even engaging the diaspora as our largest customer segment. Despite employing over 300 Gambians since 2020, we find ourselves stifled by outdated regulatory frameworks. These mechanisms, originally designed for commodity trading, have been compromised by conflicts of interest. Major importers effectively rent licenses from the leadership of our Medicines Control Agency, who then regulate our company on behalf of the nation. This isn't about increasing value, but defending against our disruptive business model. Our journey in emerging markets defies conventional startup progression frameworks. The path from MVP to product-market fit to growth is fraught with unique challenges that textbooks often overlook. Yet, we persist. This experience underscores a crucial lesson for entrepreneurs eyeing global expansion: understanding and navigating local regulatory landscapes is not just important - it's existential. As we continue to innovate and serve our community, we remain committed to overcoming these hurdles, driven by our mission to improve healthcare access for all Gambians. I was invited to speak on the main stage at South Summit in Madrid last week and the discussion really took the large audience through my journey as an entrepreneur over the last 40 years culminating in Rezolve. Apparently, it was voted by attendees to have been the most enjoyable and enlightening session (which, given there were 700+ speakers and 18,000+ attendees, this is more than somewhat surprising!).
