Another great innovation from NATS and Heathrow introducing Pairwise Separation into the brilliant Intelligent Approach system. With the number of capacity constrained airports forecast to rise significantly by 2050, this type of incremental optimisation and operational resilience solution will become much more commonplace. Congratulations to all involved. UPDATE 16th Jan A further update to this post explaining the concept of Pairwise Separation: Imagine planes flying in the sky. To keep them safe, there needs to be enough space between them. This is called separation. Traditionally, air traffic controllers used a set of rules to ensure safe distances between planes. These rules were based on the size and weight of the planes, as bigger planes create stronger air currents that can affect smaller planes following behind. Pairwise Separation is a smarter way of doing things. Instead of using general rules, it looks at each pair of planes individually. It considers things like: The specific types of planes involved: Some planes create stronger air currents than others. The exact distance and speed of each plane: This allows for more precise calculations. Real-time data: Controllers use the latest information about each plane's position and speed to make more accurate decisions. By considering these factors, Pairwise Separation allows for smaller and safer distances between some aircraft, which can: Increase the number of planes that can land or take off in a given time. Reduce delays and improve on-time performance. Save fuel and reduce emissions. Think of it like this: instead of having a single set of rules for everyone, Pairwise Separation is like having a tailor-made set of rules for each pair of planes, making air travel safer and more efficient. This new tool performs the Pairwise Separation calculations automatically for the controller, allowing them to concentrate on delivering the safest, optimised sequencing into Heathrow.
