Perhaps the most important aspect of the event is our public call for a *National Commission on Black Women & Girls*.
Why do we need a Commission you ask?
Because, the negative narratives about Black women that is rooted in colonial times persists, and is literally killing us. Black women have poorer maternal health outcomes than white women, are affected by the race-gender pay gap and are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system, the mental health system, are diagnosed with cancer at a later stage than white women, fare worse in the cost-of-living crisis and on high on the agenda this week is Black femicide and the poor response from the system to recognise the disparity and act. I could go on.... All of these things have one thing in common, but society discusses them as 'isolated issues'. The Commission on Black Women and Girls will examine and explore the interconnectedness, the causes and seek recommendation for policy changes. This has never been done in the UK before.
A National Commission is a formal body established to investigate specific issues, gather data, and provide recommendations for policy and systemic changes. They bring together experts, stakeholders, and community leaders to examine challenges comprehensively and propose actionable solutions.
Soul Purpose 360 CEO Palma Black said: "It is time to drawn together the full range of policy areas that leave Black women wanting... It is time for a National Commission dedicated to Black women and girls to investigate and seek policy changes and initiatives that address these issues at both national and community levels. But we cannot do it alone. Change on this scale requires real collaboration and allyship - from Black women and all those who have the power and the will to make change."
