Letting utility/industrial-scale battery energy storage systems burn out is really the only approach once a fire starts, for sure, but the Holy Grail here is PREVENTION of fires, which can be done with technology that exists today. This opens up a myriad of use cases that today would be untenable given the fire risk. Examples include rooftops, basements, really anything indoors.

INTERESTING: Now if there was only an LDES solution that had no possibility of thermal runaway. As existing standards and practices fail, locals are taking over and imposing their own standards. This can result in chaos as we experienced in solar when local fire departments started invoking unique standards adding cost and often not making systems safer. Industry needs to step up.
