💡𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐌𝐑𝐈: 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲! 🔍 Hello MRI Community, Last week we shared our latest educational video where we delved into optimising 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 in MRI (link in comments). This focus brought out critical insights into how we can enhance the image quality, not just in the brain but across various challenges, including 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 where getting the right level of oversampling plays a significant role. In our discussion, we also explored the 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞-𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐬 between increasing the 𝐅𝐎𝐕 and adjusting the 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 %. While extending the FOV can prevent issues like nose wrap, it's important to consider how this could potentially affect 𝐩𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐥 𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞 and 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (according to the MR scanner you are working with). Furthermore, we touched on a less discussed but key aspects, like the fact that aliasing can occur not only in phase encoding but also 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝟑𝐃 𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬. Distinguishing between 𝐩𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 and 𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 is important and can sometimes be confusing, yet understanding these distinctions is essential to avoid wrap around artifacts. Thanks for the shoutout, Research Commercialization at Texas Tech ! we are stoked to have your support. B-mode ultrasound is an affordable device used in a multitude of settings. Like many things, this device has a few factors to consider critically. The main problem we've run into is the dramatic influence the skill of the sonographer has on follow-up images. To us, it makes sense that two follow-up images should be similar...but sometimes they are not! Kealey and I developed a novel device we believe will dramatically improve the reliability and accuracy of ultrasound imaging. This is a critical step for medical imaging to become even more reproducible in research and clinical settings. #TTUSInvents Ultrasound imaging techniques (sonography) are utilized extensively throughout the medical profession to capture images of structures within a patient’s body. This particular technique is often utilized over MRI due to its lower cost. Despite its widespread use, sonographers cannot consistently capture accurate and repeatable (reliable) scans among different patients and between separate probe passes (i.e., image slice) on a patient’s body. Co-inventors, Dr. Jacob Mota and Ms. Kealey Wohlgemuth out of the Department of Kinesiology & Sports Management at Texas Tech University have developed a ultrasound probe guide system aimed at standardizing image acquisition. MRI of a neuroscientist kissing her 2-month-old son offers a modern, unforgettable twist on the classic mother-child portrait. I just can’t believe how beautiful this is. 👶 The mother and her child are curled up together inside of a 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging scanner. The scanner bangs and beeps, shudders and screeches. The baby is finally sleeping, pressed firmly against his mother’s chest, and so is still enough for the MRI to see inside his head. 🧲 A single MR image, like this one, takes several minutes to capture. Moving just a millimeter leaves a blur on the image. The mother and baby must hold their pose. 📸 To some people, this image was a disturbing reminder of the fragility of human beings. Others were drawn to the way that the two figures, with their clothes and hair and faces invisible, became universal, and could be any human mother and child, at any time or place in history. An interesting overview of some of the MRI scanners available and their various capabilities. Within Australia and NZ there are some incredibly advanced MRI machines installed too, and of course the skilled radiologists to report these intricate results. I love hearing more about the MRI capabilities within the hospitals and clinics of radiologists and clients we work with. It offers great insights for our doctors either moving around for locums or for a more permanent change of workplace as well.
