Ancient Speed Demons:the Athleticism of Prehistoric Aboriginal Australians As the world gears up for the 2024 Olympics, where athletes from around the globe will showcase their peak physical capabilities, it’s worth reflecting on the incredible athleticism of our ancestors. When we think of speed and human performance, Usain Bolt, the fastest man alive, often comes to mind. However, recent discoveries in southwestern New South Wales (NSW), Australia, reveal that prehistoric Aboriginal Australians possessed remarkable speed and agility that rival modern athletes. About 20,000 years ago, an Aboriginal man sprinted barefoot along a lake edge, leaving footprints in the mud that have fascinated scientists. Analysis shows he was running at an impressive 37 kilometers per hour and still accelerating. While this speed is slightly less than Bolt's peak of 42 kilometers per hour, the ancient runner achieved it without spiked shoes, specialized tracks, or professional training. Peter McAllister, in his book "Manthropology: The Science of the Inadequate Modern Male," points out that this prehistoric athlete emerged from a population of just 150,000 Aboriginal men. In contrast, Bolt was selected from millions. This suggests that many ancient Australians could have surpassed modern records if given the same opportunities for training. McAllister argues that contemporary men might be the least physically capable cohort of Homo sapiens to ever exist, not just in terms of speed but overall physical condition. Ancient humans relied on their physical abilities for survival, honing their bodies through daily challenges. Today, technological advancements and sedentary lifestyles have significantly reduced our physical exertion. As we celebrate the 2024 Olympians, it's important to recognize the natural prowess of our ancestors. The footprints in NSW are more than just historical artifacts; they are a testament to the extraordinary potential of the human body. 🪑The Plateau I loved Geography and mainly because of the field trips we got to complete. Not everyone chose Geography as an A level subject, but for some of us who got to choose it there was discovery in the neighbourhood surrounding the school and getting up to all sorts as teens do. If you could manage to jump and grab some mangoes 🥭 from someone's trees, even more and more better 😀😀 The East African Plateau is something we learnt about and as a teen I thought to myself how great it would be to see that, not just imagine We do face our own #Plateaus in life and this is often experienced when the gap between what we are seeking/ our goals and where we are is so close. So basically, you have done so well 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 and closer to your goals. That's when the plateau feeling kicks in and sometimes you lose motivation or experience a "stale mate feeling". Navigating the plateau: What can you do? 🤗Recognise all you have done and the progress you have made 💃Celebrate each step you took 🙏🏿Acknowledge the transformation 👍🏿Continue with the practice you have learned 🎯Commit to mental fitness as a daily practice 👆🏿Choose another areas in your life where you want to improve Ask yourself what other area needs your attention #personaldevelopment #careergrowth #leadership #mentalfitness #transformation #coaching
