Another day wishing to be at the SpaceX office, I bet it was a mad day for them. It's not every day you launch 116 satellites on a single rocket. The Falcon 9 just keeps proving that it's the most functional launch vehicle of recent times. SpaceX launched the latest in its series of dedicated rideshare missions on Aug. 16, putting more than 100 satellites for commercial and government customers into orbit. Transporter missions are very exciting to watch because of the range of payloads on board. There are companies like Planet, which had 36 cubesats and their hyperspectral imaging satellite on board. Then there are companies like Sateliot, Tomorrow.io, and Kuva Space with their first-ever satellites to go to space. It feels like a collection of stories, some written by amateurs and some by well-established writers. Watching them all unfold together to go on their own journeys must be quite an experience for the crew. The list of companies involved in this mission is pretty long, notable ones being Exolaunch, ISISPACE Group, Maverick Space Systems, SEOPS, European Space Agency - ESA, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, United Kingdom Space Command and TASA, etc. I will try to make a post covering the various kinds of payloads on board. The launch brings the number of satellites deployed through SpaceX's rideshare program to more than 1,000. Hera will conduct a detailed analysis of the DART impact on Dimorphos, providing us with crucial data to deepen our understanding of the effects. A key focus will be on measuring the "Beta" factor, which indicates the amount of material ejected during the impact and its influence on the asteroid's trajectory. Join the Space Surveillance and Tracking for #SpacecraftOperations online workshop on 22 May The new ESA #ZeroDebris design and operation requirements introduce many new and challenging aspects to be addressed in early #MissionDesign. The requirements are part of ESA’s comprehensive Zero Debris approach, the Agency’s bold goal to significantly limit the production of debris in Earth and Lunar orbits by 2030 for all future missions, programmes and activities (https://lnkd.in/eD_ChXpP). For spacecraft operated in the protected LEO or GEO regions, the orbit determination accuracy has to be estimated and is required to stay within specified limits. To support mission designers in such an assessment, #ESA and OKAPI:Orbits have upgraded the DRAMA software with additional functionalities to assess spacecraft trackability in view of a space surveillance network. The first ‘Ariane 6’ launch created by the European Space Agency - ESA DID NOT have a successful mission… This is after YEARS of delays. Regardless of the successful launch, your rocket is still floating out in space with an “Anomaly” and unable to perform reignitions or carry out the most basic tasks. This was a $4 billion project! This is not a celebratory moment when you have no idea why your rocket couldn’t complete its mission and might be a threat to people on Earth upon reentry. The mission plan was to reignite the engine that powers the upper part of the rocket twice, practicing its ability to make multiple stops in orbit. The engine relit just once before the anomaly… Next, the rocket’s upper stage was expected to intentionally dive back toward Point Nemo (spot in Pacific Ocean farther from land than any place on Earth). At the same time, two experimental capsules were supposed to be jettisoned and attempt to survive the trip home. The mission ended before any of this happened, and they still have NO IDEA what is going on. Would you trust your satellites with them? I’ll let you be the judge of that… SpaceX will undoubtedly lead the way moving forward anyways. $67 million per launch with SpaceX or $100 million per launch with Ariane 6. SpaceX has a larger payload capacity as well. The threat of in-orbit collisions was highlighted over the last few days 2 satellites passing within twenty metres of each other. According to LeoLabs, had the two collided, it would have resulted in the creation of between 2,000 and 7,000 cataloged fragments, which would have meant an increased collision risk to a large portion of low Earth orbit. https://lnkd.in/e9Zd--kW

The ADRAS-J spacecraft is one of a new category of highly maneuverable spacecraft intended for inspection and servicing. During the Active Debris Removal, the inspection satellite will approach an abandoned upper stage of a H-2A rocket that’s been floating aimlessly in space since 2009. The growing #spacedebris problem poses a significant threat to functional satellites in orbit and to future space missions. Debris in orbit is hard to track, so #accountability for everyone's actions is crucial in making space sustainable. To highlight the top polluters, we look at the bar chart visualizing the objects that have generated the most debris. In blue is the total number of debris pieces attributed to the object at the time of the event and orange represents the active pieces still in orbit. The Fengyun 1C (China National Space Administration) tops the charts as it generated the most debris when hit by an anti-satellite missile during a test by #China, followed by the Cosmos/ Kosmos (Roscosmos) 1408 event due to a similar test carried out by #Russia. The debris generated from Cosmos/ Kosmos 2251 was due to an accidental collision with Iridium 33. Lastly, the Delta 1 (NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration) and the CZ-6A (China National Space Administration) are rocket bodies that exploded in space. While this chart offers a snapshot of the debris problem, it's important to remember that the numbers may not be comprehensive as debris tracking and measurement techniques are still evolving. The chart only represents a small fraction of the debris population, as many smaller fragments may be undetectable with our current technology. The graph also doesn't showcase the spatial distribution of debris, which also plays a crucial role in estimating collision risks. This visual representation of the #spacedebris issue should be a stark reminder of the urgency of the problem. We must collectively strive towards promoting #internationalcollaboration to address the #global nature of the space debris problem, raising public awareness about the dangers of space debris, and advocating for responsible space practices. #spacesafety #PRC #Russia #NASA #ASAT #satellites #debris
