I spent my Wednesday attending an amazing webinar on Career Guidance in Geospatial Data Science with some truly inspiring speakers! Linda Stevens shared invaluable advice about learning and taking risks emphasizing the importance of embracing change, challenging oneself, and defining your own path. She reminded us that having advocates is crucial, and the higher you go, the more challenges you may face. Chelle Gentemann spoke about the importance of building a community, balancing work, life, and family, and the power of collaboration. Her insights on self-esteem and sharing your work were very motivating! Lauren Frederick tackled early career challenges such as imposter syndrome and confidence, especially in a male dominated environment. She stressed the importance of technical and soft skills, networking, and advocating for yourself. Melanie Abuel shared her powerful story of perseverance balancing motherhood, dropping out, and returning to complete her studies. She now leads a team of engineers and spoke to her high school’s graduating set, while also receiving awards from her university. Truly inspiring! Happy New Week Everyone !!!! I’m excited to share that I have successfully completed Esri MOOC on Spatial Data Science: The New Frontier in Analytics, Throughout the course, we explored some truly cutting-edge topics in data science, including Data Engineering, Predictive Analysis, Suitability Modeling, Pattern Detection and Clustering, and Deep Learning. The final course on Communicating Results was particularly enlightening, teaching us how to convey complex insights in ways that drive understanding and action. This training has not only deepened my technical knowledge but also enhanced my ability to apply geospatial techniques to solve real-world problems. I now feel more confident working with spatial data and translating it into meaningful solutions. The impact of this course on my professional growth is immense, and I’m excited to incorporate these new skills into my ongoing projects. A huge thank you to Esri for providing such a valuable learning opportunity. Happy New Week!!! As we come to the end of September, it’s a great moment to reflect on how far we’ve come. This month has brought both challenges and successes, and I’m grateful for the lessons learned and the connections made along the way. Highlights include attending the Esri User West Africa Conference in Abuja(Sambus Geospatial Nigeria, Sambus Geospatial ) and the Esri Emergency Management Forum, which offered valuable insights into disaster response solutions. I also joined a session on Applying Location Intelligence to Quality Improvement in Healthcare, discovering innovative ways GIS can drive positive change in the health sector. Additionally, the Bridging the Gender Gaps in the AI Era at the Workplace webinar(FIG - International Federation of Surveyors) was a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity as we navigate the evolving tech landscape. Happy New Week Everyone!!! Over the weekend, I worked on the At-Risk Population Evaluation Map for Lokoja, Kogi State Nigeria. This map highlights(bookmarked) areas near waterways with a focus on regions that have a significant adult population. Clicking on any location provides detailed data, including: - FID, UID - Population - Centroid coordinates (X, Y) - Nearest cell tower, power source, and bank distances - CICO Access, Urbanicity. - Adult ratios, urban/rural classification, and total adult population - Road types and distances, among other key metrics. I also worked on an Evacuation Map for #NewOrleans, highlighting areas with at-risk populations (especially children) that can be used for hurricane evacuation planning. This map shows key evacuation routes to ensure effective and organized response during emergencies. Below are the links to access these maps. Yesterday, I attended an enlightening session on “Applying Location Intelligence to Quality Improvement in Healthcare.” Kristen Kurland a GIS specialist with a long history of teaching GIS to healthcare professionals, discussed her work with UPMC Children’s Hospital. She uses geospatial analysis to drive population health strategies, team-based quality improvement, and chronic condition management. A notable example was how GIS revealed a factory contributing to increased asthma cases in children, leading to the factory’s closure and a significant drop in health issues. Kendrick Davis and Margarita Monge also presented on integrating Location Intelligence into Quality Improvement (QI) frameworks. They introduced the Chief Resident for Research and Wellness (CRRW) program, which focuses on: -Coordinating and strengthening interventions using GIS -Integrating GIS with mental and behavioral health practices -Measuring the geographic impact of these interventions Their work highlights how GIS can refine quality improvement processes and address complex health challenges. After attending this, I’m excited about its potential for Africa, especially Nigeria. Kristen Kurland showcased how GIS was used to identify a factory causing asthma issues in children, leading to its closure and improved health outcomes. How can Nigeria integrate GIS into healthcare? 1. Disease Surveillance: Track and manage outbreaks in real-time, directing resources more effectively and predicting future hotspots. 2. Healthcare Access: Map facilities and populations to identify gaps and optimize locations for new clinics and mobile health units. 3. Resource Allocation: Use GIS to match resources with the greatest needs, improving efficiency and outcomes. 4. Environmental Health: Monitor and address environmental factors like pollution and unsafe water that impact health. 5. Policy and Planning: Utilize geospatial data for better decision-making and targeted health interventions. Integrating GIS could revolutionize Nigeria’s healthcare by making responses more proactive and data-driven.
