Yesterday I watched Mumbai Indians lose to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Bangalore at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In a close game, RCB defeated MI to reach the final. Without context, anyone would conclude I am talking #IPL. But no, this RCB is different, not as prone to the heebie-jeebies and there is no #rohitsharma in this MI and the game is the #WPL Eliminator. Some five years ago, I had predicted that women’s cricket was about to break through to mass popularity and even started work on a multi-city talent-spotting activation idea for my then employer Croma. Sadly, between COVID and changes in my priorities post-COVID, that idea never saw the light of day. Five years on, women’s cricket has clearly come of age. A stadium full of fans rooting for their favorite teams, two teams engaged in an intense battle for victory, chants of “Perry, Perry” egging an Aussie star to excel for her Indian franchise, and two local girls, neither of whom is a India regular, taking their team home in a tight finish; all go to prove that the depth of talent and width of market required for the sport to thrive have now been achieved. I am now looking forward to see Delhi Capitals take on RCB. Interesting sidelight, whichever side wins, this will be the first trophy in their cabinet!
