Recently, the infamous ransomware gang ALPHV (A.K.A. BlackCat) has made headlines yet again. The group breached MeridianLink's network earlier this month and later proceeded to report them to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for not announcing that it had been breached. While ransomware gangs have previously been known to blackmail their victims by threatening to report the breach to regulatory organisations, this appears to be the first public example of a group publicly following through with the act. This story highlights the continued evolution of strategies used by cyber attackers and underpins the overall need for a proactive fortification of cyber security. #ALPHV #Ransomware #Cybersecurity

A few years ago I spoke to someone about a similar problem. They told me that cyber security was simple: you just had to ensure it cost more to break into Computer Systems than it was worth. I pointed out that an attacker may well have a tool that greatly reduces the cost or a reason to access the data that makes it far more valuable. For instance, the cost of hacking into Windows systems was greatly reduced by the leaking of Eternal Blue and many targets of the WannaCry ransomware based on it were not specifically targeted. Another problem is that exactly what 'value' means differs between attackers. A hacktivist may well deface a website not to create value for them but to pursue what they perceive as the greater good.
