An interesting article here about the Karamojong peoples.
2026 will be the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP2026). As the co-facilitator of the Working Group on Pastoralists and Water, welcome to my first monthly blog (https://lnkd.in/gjBKSijk) on these topics as I simply share my own learning journey with you - starting from the late 1990's in Uganda. I think that there may be some surprises in store over the coming months as I write. RWSN - Rural Water Supply Network - Adrian Cullis - Ann Waters-Bayer - Jonathan Davies

Highlighting the Education Challenges for Orang Asal in Sarawak This morning, a tragic incident occurred where two young girls and one boy went missing after a boat they were on capsized (according to the Borneo Post, there were 18 students altogether). This heartbreaking event underscores a persistent issue—how many more lives must be at risk before significant change is made? Sadly, this is not the first time such a tragedy has occurred, and if nothing is done, it will not be the last. For many Indigenous children in Sarawak, accessing education is full of challenges. According to YB Fadhlina Sidek, currently 555 schools in Sarawak are classified as dilapidated. As of June 2024, 361 of these schools require significant repairs, and 194 need complete rebuilding. On accessibility of rural schools, in 2018, in data shared by the then State Minister of Education, 200 schools can be accessed by river or sea while 521 others could not be accessed by all-weather roads. Students are placed in danger before they could even reach school. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs emphasizes that safety is a fundamental human requirement, a prerequisite for achieving higher levels of growth, including education. Yet, for many Indigenous children, the journey to school—whether navigating treacherous waterways or attending unsafe, crumbling buildings—fails to meet even this basic need. We need to prioritize the safety and well-being of Indigenous children in Sarawak. This call, is long overdue, and has been said many times, only to be revisited only when there is a tragedy. Our children’s access to safe, quality education is not just a necessity but a right that must be fulfilled.

WATER SAFETY - What needs to change? | Recent multiple drowning tragedies have left the Indian-Australian community reeling. These tragic events naturally have an effect on not just Indian International Students but all International Students - whether in Melbourne or other locations across Australia. Water Safety is critical to the health and safety of so many international students while they study in Australia. Late 2023, Wise Words Media attended presentation by Victorian Emergency Services. Presented in partnership with Study Melbourne, Life Saving Victoria and Victoria Police - topics included: * Australia has unique and potentially dangerous waterways • Many students arrive in Australia with limited or no water safety knowledge and swimming ability • While studying in Australia, students are likely to take trips to waterways – it is crucial they know how to be safe Speaking specifically to the topic of water safety in late 2023, Life Saving Victoria presented valuable, expert insights into their vital guide and helpful information. It's reassuring to again see all Melbourne universities working so proactively in partnership with Victorian Emergency Services to help educate not just Indian International Students but all International Students.
