The multicultural youth GOTV guide that my colleague Henry A.J. Ramos I have been working on has been released! While it is focused on California youth-serving nonprofits, it is mostly transferable to other states. Consult the The Democracy Capacity Project voter assistance guide for your state for supplemental information. The guide is geared towards helping nonprofits turn out young voters of color, but the its recommendations are applicable for GOTV generally. If you work for any nonprofit with a client base, here are two things you can do this year to turn them out to vote: 1. Make sure they are registered to vote! Census data indicates that about 80% of persons who register to vote in a presidential election year actually go out and vote. This is likely because of all the television, radio, and social media messaging that takes place  combined with having just recently having registered. In a sense, new voters in a presidential election year have a GOTV campaign aimed at them from a number of sources. So if you can only do one thing this year, make sure your clients get registered to vote this year. (N.B., we only see this phenomenon during a presidential election year.) 2. If you can only do two things this year, make sure to remind your clients to vote and let them know that their vote matters and they are making a difference! Recent research on voter turnout shows that nonprofit clients are particularly receptive to nonpartisan GOTV campaigns supported by nonprofits they have worked with, and that their turnout rates increase significantly when they are encouraged to vote by those nonprofits. Nonprofit engagement can improve the turnout rates across all categories of voters, and has been shown to make significant improvements in turnout rates for young voters, voters of color, and low-income voters. Improving turnout rates attracts the attention of political campaigns that focus on high-propensity voters. This attention in turn engages voters further and encourages even higher turnout. In solidarity with Indigenous communities, it is crucial that we amplify the voices of leaders and organizations dedicated to ending gender-based violence in tribal communities. Today, we spotlight the incredible work of The National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, Inc. (NIWRC), a Native-led nonprofit organization dedicated to ending violence against Native women and children. NIWRC uplifts the collective voices of grassroots advocates and offers culturally grounded resources, technical assistance and training, and policy development to strengthen tribal sovereignty. Indigenous communities face unique challenges. Native women are disproportionately affected by violence in the United States and across the world. For American Indian and Alaska Native women, 4 in 5 (84.3%) have experienced violence in their lifetime. This includes: 📍 56.1% have experienced sexual violence. 📍 55.5% have endured physical intimate partner violence. 📍 48.8% have experienced stalking. 📍 96% of Native female victims of sexual violence experience violence at the hands of a non-Native perpetrator. 📍 21% have experienced interracial violence. 📍 The murder rate of Native women is more than 10 times the national average on some reservations. Whether it's through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness on social media, everyone can play a role in eliminating sexual assault. During Native American Heritage Month, we're reminded of the enduring strength and profound beauty inherent in indigenous cultures. As we celebrate, it's paramount to recognize the daily obstacles faced by these communities, especially those living on Reservations. We need to channel our focus towards the pivotal roles we can play in advocating for transformative changes to governmental policies that have inflicted lasting harm on generations of families. How You Can Make an Impact? - Educate Yourself: Dive into the history, culture, and ongoing issues affecting Native American communities. Knowledge empowers advocacy. A lot of the things we learned surrounding Native issues in K-12 are inaccurate. There's a great new Ken Burns documentary on PBS called The American Buffalo. Watch it. - Engage and Amplify: Follow and share content from Native and Indigenous social media accounts that enlightens, inspires, and encourages dialogue. - Support Indigenous Businesses: Contribute to economic empowerment by seeking out and supporting Native American-owned businesses. - Donate: Support PWNA's mission financially to help meet immediate needs, creating a foundation for sustainable, long-term solutions. A 2019 study found that, on average, just 0.4% of total annual funding by large U.S. foundations was given to Native American communities and causes. An asterisk *. This is what most Indigenous women (and people) are represented by in research and studies. The * usually signifies “not statistically relevant”. This is horrible on so many levels. In my mind, the * is another form of erasure. Another way to erase, eliminate, and delete Native histories, presents, and futures. I see everyday in conversations about women’s equality (or lack thereof) how our “statistical irrelevance” leads to our not being considered or included at all. This is one of MANY reasons why I think it is imperative that we support Native women, Native organizations, businesses and communities! Because we are relevant!
