Joe Kernen said it perfectly, “Things don’t grow to the sky.” That includes the Magnificent 7 and the giant redwoods that surround our offices here in Northern California. Grateful for the opportunity to share my thoughts on the current market environment with Joe this morning on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” We discussed the rotation away from the Mag 7 that began in December and into the “Boring 493,” providing investors with compelling valuations and opportunities to broaden their portfolios across sectors, including health care and consumer staples. Thanks CNBC for an enjoyable conversation. https://lnkd.in/g_wmKZ23 Discussions in the link below include forward-looking assumptions and opinions by Scharf Investments and there is no guarantee that the recommendations will be profitable. Investments include risk of loss. The securities identified and described do not represent all of the securities purchased, sold or recommended for client accounts. The viewer should not assume that an investment in the securities identified was or will be profitable. #activemanagement #valueinvesting #quality #defensive #boring493

Bloomberg recently spotlighted the risky practices that some PE firms are engaging in, like over-lending and NAV financing, which can mask underlying financial instabilities. You all know how I feel about this. At Tide Rock, we firmly believe that real value comes from operational excellence and sustainable growth, not financial engineering. Our strategy is rooted in investing to ensure that our portfolio companies achieve tangible results through disciplined and effective management. It doesn’t make sense to me how many financial engineers and analysts PE firms hire who have never run a company. They spend their time on what they are comfortable with—financial manipulation—while we, as operators, dedicate our time to what we do best: growing businesses. This hands-on, operator-focused approach sets us apart and ensures that we deliver real, sustainable value to our investors. Our approach has consistently led to an average annual growth rate of 30+% across our portfolio companies. If you're looking for a partner who prioritizes true operational excellence over financial gimmicks, reach out and find out more about how we work. #UnleveredBuyout

Chill, they’re just investors. I’m often asked what it’s like talking to investors. It’s easy if you take the money out of the equation. Talk about your business—what works and what doesn’t. Have them tell you what their successful companies are doing right and what pitfalls to avoid. Ask them what traits all their companies share. They have a ton of insights, and chances are those are more valuable than money (plus, they’re free 💸). Shout out to Matt Shapiro for the great convo, and welcome to the South!

EXCLUSIVE | Why Thorsten Winkelmann and his team really joined AllianceBernstein Culture, consistency and collaboration all fed into the decision made by the European equity stalwart and four of his colleagues to find a new home and exit Allianz Global Investors. Thorsten Winkelmann joined remotely from Frankfurt, while portfolio manager Marcus Morris-Eyton, CFA sat with me in our London studio. Watch the video above or listen to the entire conversation in the podcast (below), which delves into the specifics of the new launches and finds out what the managers think they will bring to AB. Other topics covered in the in-depth interview include: *How the team fits within the ‘entrepreneurial’ aspect of AB’s semi-boutique approach to team construction; *The rationale for launching European and global growth funds, and the immediate response from their first client interactions; *How the definition of ‘growth’ differs slightly from the perceived wisdom in markets; and *Whether Citywire’s belief that the three main reasons for AB hiring the team – experience, diversification and star power – is a fair summary. All in the link below.
