In my line of work, I often find myself surrounded by familiar faces at industry events, as we travel from one country to another. When people unfamiliar with ship chandlery ask about my profession, I simply mention that I work in sales. However, this usually leads to further inquiries such as, "What exactly do you sell?" to which I respond, "I provide everything necessary for a ship." Ship chandlery is a vast sector within the shipping industry, often referred to as suppliers, catering mainly to ship owners and managers. In the Philippines, where I am from, many individuals are not well-versed in ship chandlery or the logistics of shipping. The common associations are with seafarers, couriers like FEDEX and LBC, rather than the intricate world of ship supplies. As suppliers, we act as intermediaries, purchasing goods from manufacturers and selling them to ship owners and managers. Both the suppliers and the buyers are the BACKBONE OF THE GLOBAL ECONOMY. Spoiler Alert: the Panama Canal is pretty cool 🚢 ... Earlier this year, I got the chance to go through the Agua Clara locks on a Princess Cruise. As a Logistics Badass, it was great to see such an important piece of global shipping. That being said, I couldn't help but think about the reduced sailings in the canal. It didn't seem right that my cruise ship was going to take a joy ride through the locks, just for kicks. There's a larger discussion here about the intersection of tourism and commerce. But putting that aside, I really enjoyed riding the water-elevator up into the lake. Getting to watch from shore as our own ship and then a large MSC container ship passed through was awesome. Throughout my vacation, it was so much fun seeing all the ports I've sent so many goods through over the years. From Port Everglades, to the port of Cartagena, to the Panama Canal in all it's glory. When logisticians walk into a store, we tend to see things in a different light. We have a better understanding of why something is or isn’t in stock. We know how many mountains were moved, and how many problems were solved (or not) to get it there. Seeing how many people it takes around the world to make it happen every day was amazing. And expanding my own view was an experience I'll always treasure. It's a lovely bit of perspective I'm taking into 2024.
