Rehabilitation nurses will take courses like anatomy and physiology, learn about the different types of therapies and the psychosocial aspects of care. But it's not until they start working directly with patients, and seeing their progress from start to finish, that they experience the emotional satisfaction of helping someone resume living their life after an injury or surgery, or the fulfillment of providing ongoing care if they deal with a disability or disorder. You HAVE to be compassionate to be successful in this field!🥲 👇🏿What's the greatest or most important lesson you've learned since becoming a rehab nurse?

A patient collapses in the doorway and has a seizure. Another comes to the front desk with central crushing chest pain. Then a concerned mother asks you to look at her drowsy newborn with a non-blanching rash…. With overstretched ED’s and ambulance services we are seeing a lot more urgent and emergency presentations at GP surgeries. What makes these ‘Waiting Room’ Emergencies so challenging? Well, we’re not really geared up for them…. 🤷♂️ We’re using the emergency kitbag from the cupboard that few in the practice are familiar with.  🧐 There is massive skill fade of acute skills, which are rarely deployed in day to day general practice  🤨 There’s generally a lack of dedicated processes and systems to treat these patients, we're caught off-guard.  🤯 A ‘flash team’ of forms around the patient, who have not worked together in this context before.  😳 The whole time you’re dealing with the situation, the routine work continues to build up, only adding to the pressure…. I put together a training session for the skilled and dedicated staff at Ide Lane Surgery. We worked through some of these HALO (High Acuity, Low Occurrence) presentations, reviewing up to date practical guidance followed by hands-on rehearsal through low-fidelity, in-situ simulation in the practice waiting room using the live emergency kit bag. It was great to see everyone get stuck in, particularly the vital role provided by non-clinical staff (practice receptionists and secretaries). How can technology support improved patient safety at the point of care? It's a question we discussed with a wonderful group of perioperative nurses in Latham, NY... It was a pleasure to be part of #AORN Eastern New York's "Cabin Fever" event over the weekend. We had the opportunity to chat to local nurses about the challenges of perioperative documentation, and to reinforce the importance of full and accurate surgical supply records, for optimal patient safety. We discussed how new image-recognition technology is adding advanced automation to a task that commonly causes frustration - and showed them how new technology is transforming perioperative documentation. We failed the first nurse in Congress. This is so heartbreaking. No one should ever have to sit in stool or urine for hours in the country that spends the most on healthcare in the world. There is no dignity in the American Healthcare system. “Former Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson's family to file a lawsuit against Baylor Hospital says she died on Dec. 31st of “medical negligence" after being left in her feces and urine just days after spinal surgery.” I think nursing/medical education & the corporatization of healthcare forces healthcare workers to focus on the immediate & most urgent needs of patients without helping us understand the long term effects of our actions or inaction on patients. This includes physiological & psychological impacts, lack of care or lack of communication compounds & creates opportunities for harm. The “swiss cheese model” oversimplifies this phenomenon & frames it as a necessary or inevitable outcome of a broken system but our individual actions can & will impact whether or not harm reaches the patient. I don’t know what staffing was like in this incident, if its anything like the majority of care settings in this country, staffing probably wasn’t adequate. Without safe staffing, dignity is lost. Patients deserve so much better. We know Black patients & particularly Black women are less likely to be heard by clinicians & cared for adequately in the healthcare setting.
