In-camera or CGI? Meet the perfect blend. I love everything about this #JohnWick4 #ArcDeTriomphe action sequence with VFX by Rodeo FX First -- obviously, a massive use of CGI here. Closer to 100% of the pixels than 50% of the pixels. Second -- with the way is was shot, no-one was robbed of performing their craft. DOP, gaffer and editor all worked with all the important moving elements in the frame. If an all-bluescreen action scene with many essential elements added in post feels "fake", it's often not the quality of the CGI that does it, but the fact that the DOP did not frame the elements in the shot, because they were not there, the gaffer could not light all the elements, because they were not there, the editor could not find the perfect in- and out-points of the moving elements in the frame, because they were not there, and the CGI lighters and compositors have no chance integrating their CGI elements in the scene's lighting, because a lighting of the whole scene never even existed. The solution of this scene is just brilliant.
