I was chatting recently to a production company who were umming and ahhing between London and Manchester as a location. Don’t get me wrong, London is London, I get it. But having produced in both and many places in between, Manchester, for me (of course) is the better bet for four reasons: 1. Firstly the location. Manchester’s architecture and buildings, both old and new, creates a backdrop that can be uniquely Manchester, but also mimic other cities like New York (and London 🙂) It gives production teams a lot of flexibility. It’s also REALLY near country settings - if you need a multi-location shoot, you can be in the Peak District in 30 minutes. The Gucci x North Face ad on my website (https://lnkd.in/ekNka6DM) was shot in rural Yorkshire, but the crew and kit came from Manchester. 2. Access to talent. There is a strong community of friendly, highly experienced, highly talented creatives and film crew, who’ve worked on every level of project you can imagine, from features, to high end dramas to commercials, and everything in between. 3. Budgets go further. Location hires are affordable, accommodation and travel is cheaper plus almost everything from facilities, vehicles and catering, right down to walkie talkies, tend to be less expensive. In my experience time and time again is that you get more for your spend, and a healthier profit margin to boot. 4. Things can be done quicker. Last minute shoots can be handled easily because of the strength of the community here. Knowing which crew to hire and knowing the exact person to speak to in the Film Office for example has meant I’ve turned around big productions in a matter of days. #advertising #tvadvertising #commercialproduction #tvcommercial #adproduction #media #marketing #ukadvertising #londonadvertising #ukmedia #ukfilm #ukproduction #stillsproduction #filmfixer #fixer #locations #cityscapes #locationshooting #manchester *photo from a recent Manchester roof top recce!

Silencio please. Many of us have lived through the years when innovations came from New York. Over the years, other capitals have had their turn, but every now and then, the city that never sleeps still surprises me with its creativity. In Midtown (where Studio54 made history), not exactly a fashion-centric area but certainly one rich in history and legends, a well-known French private club and cultural hub has arrived. Nestled between two storefronts on the sidewalk, you'll find a door that leads down a staircase to an alley which leads to another door. Upon entering, you're greeted by opulence. This is Silencio, the latest export of French nightlife to land in NYC. Known for their late-night revelries in Paris, Silencio has opened branches in Ibiza and a second one in the City of Lights, while just beginning to explore the US market (with a pop-up at Art Basel almost 10 years ago). While the original venue credits director David Lynch for its design, the new spot has been richly imagined by Crosby Studios founder, Harry Nuriev. 🙌 What’s your take? # 279 CULTURE, United States 👉 More contents on our website, the link to the featured news is in the first comment below. 🎯 If you want to learn more about our transformative approach to generating growth (yes, what we call innovation marketing!), feel free to write us privately. Since 2001, Cineplex Cinemas’ largest location has been a popular mainstay at The Queensway and Islington Avenue in Etobicoke. Now, while theatres have struggled to rebuild their audience post-pandemic, a colossal proposal at the location is poised to reshape this area of South Etobicoke, reported UrbanToronto.ca. "Designed by WZMH Architects for Talisker Corporation, this masterplanned community would introduce a mix of residential, commercial, institutional, and public spaces across a series of buildings ranging from 7 to 46 storeys. Addressed to 1025 The Queensway, the site spans a significant 58,984m² lot at the northwest corner of Islington Avenue and the Gardiner Expressway. Currently, it houses the 20-screen Cineplex Queensway Cinemas & VIP along with its vast surface parking lot that accommodates 1,277 vehicles. The north end of the site, which was developed as stand-alone restaurants pads and a bank at the same time the cinemas went in, is already being redeveloped as Verge Condominiums by RioCan Living. Its two Turner Fleischer Architects-designed buildings — as high as 17 storeys — are topped off, while work continues on them." "The neighbourhood around this site is a dynamic mix of uses, evolving from predominantly commercial and industrial (especially between The Queensway and the Gardiner Expressway) to a new mix that is increasingly dominated by residential buildings and retail spaces. North of The Queensway's commercial strip is a low-rise residential neighbourhood." https://lnkd.in/gBfninXE #GTA #etobicoke #redevelopment #mixeduse

I recently came across a news that mentioned the demolishing of the Modernist Udhayam Theatre in Chennai to pave way for a residential project by a popular two-name builder. The news shocked me, although I have never watched a movie in Udhayam Theatre. Above all, it made me ponder the definition of what Heritage truly is and stands for. The word Heritage I believe depicts a reference point of a certain time frame. To the set of people that brackets my generation, my mother’s and my grandmother’s generation, the Taj Mahal is definitely a heritage building, as the three of us did not witness the construction of it in person, and also, we believe such a work of architecture cannot be replicated today. This belief is quite staunch towards historical heritage. But what about the contemporary heritage? Is there a particular confidence that with the technology we have today, that we could perhaps replicate these structures? Even if that were possible, one thing would blatantly differ And that is the Human Centred User Experience. Even if an exact replica of the Palace of Assembly in Chandigarh was constructed, people would still experience it differently, and why? Because of the narrative that they inherit between generations. We often think heritage is associated with something that has to be over 75 years minimum, as per textbook definitions. Something that has to be historical only, spanning over timelines talking about the legacies of royalties. But that question was debated during the demolishing of Hall of Nations by the master architect Raj Rewal in Pragati Maidan, an architectural icon that will be missed for the decades. In fact, the question grew stronger turning into a protest when Charles Correa’s Kala Academy in Goa was about to come under the bulldozer, which in all good faith did not happen. - Maybe it has got to do with the materiality and the architectural character of the structure. - Maybe it has got to do with the history that is relatively later. But what these above factors, do not illustrate is a particular culture that these contemporary icons had crated. Especially with Heritage cinematic buildings like theatres, that represented different era of Indian Cinema. Whilst most people would say Vijaya Vauhini Studios (which now became Vijaya Hospital) was the birthplace of Indian Cinema, it was Modern Theatres in Salem where Indian Cinema took birth. What remains there, is the arch that represents the history, now surrounded by a sprawling residential project. Cinematic heritage has definitely taken a beating, right from the downfall of Modern Theatres, Binny Mills, Pilot Theatre and now Udhayam Theatre. Udhayam theatre would have been a heritage building in the next 30 years to come, but sadly now makes way for a multistoried residential project, which I believe today have become luxurious matchboxes no different from one another, except for the brands that they represent. #heritage #theatre #cinema
