PAY IT FORWARD…. Starting from the bottom and working your way up takes hard work, dedication, and a little help from those who came before you. My journey began in art school, but after enlisting in the Navy and experiencing a medical discharge, I found my passion in construction. With the guidance of some incredible mentors, I worked my way from a union floor layer to a vice president of business development. I owe my success to the people who took the time to share their knowledge, advice, and stories with me. Two people who come to mind is the late Joel Naughton, and the other is retired union carpenter Dennis Barrett. They taught me no matter how big a project is, and no matter how overwhelming it looks on a large scale, to break it all down into small jobs. Don’t look at the entire building, or not even each individual floor. Minimize it to individual rooms. A floor of a building isn’t a floor without rooms, and building isn’t a building without floors. It doesn't take much effort to pay it forward and help someone else along their journey. Remember, we all started at the beginning and no one becomes a CEO, director, or vice president overnight. Your current employer may not have taken kindly to your decision to move on and may have already replaced you or taken steps to replace you.
