Had an interesting conversation with a new employee today. I’ll just call this person Rory. Rory is very new to our hospital and is from another country. She is just training to be a tech before going on to vet school. I know this person to be very intelligent, hard-working, and experienced in the veterinary field in her own country. Rory asked to have a meeting with me to discuss some issues that she has been dealing with lately. The issue is that a relatively young doctor has been quick to criticize the new employee. Additionally, the young doctor seems to be very dismissive. Turns out that another long-term technician feels the same way about this young doctor. That Tech actually has been avoiding working with that doctor if possible. However, no one has mentioned the problem before this meeting. When I have been in discussions with this young doctor, he seemed to have just a touch of attitude. Nothing serious, but it registered with me as a potential problem. I said to the new employee, maybe he doesn’t realize how he sounds. It was then that Rory said something to me that was pretty profound. She said yes, but when dealing with the clients, that doctor did not have the same tones or attitudes that he did when dealing with the technicians. So she concluded that this doctor knew full well what he was sounding like and could turn it on and off, depending on who he was speaking to at the time. I thought this was pretty insightful of the employee. Now all I have to do is figure out how to handle it. Any suggestions?

This month's Team Communication Task was Truth and Lies. Each person shared two truths about themselves and one lie. The team had to guess which one was a lie. This was such a great way to get to know each other but also an opportunity to practice active listening. Active listening within the Veterinary practice setting is essential. It's how we take our patient history, how we know what medications to fill, or what body part to xray. Active listening is about being focused on the speaker, not interrupting, avoiding barriers like an exam table, asking questions, and repeating what you understood. Active listening takes practice and refinement, so give this a try at your next all staff meeting and learn some great facts about your team while working on excellent communication skills.

Veterinary medicine as a career can be very good, sometimes bad, and occasionally very ugly. It can be super frustrating when our good intentions as veterinary professionals and the application of our extensive training get lost in the alphabet soup of pet owner's expectations, perceptions and misconceptions. No matter how hard we try, that one-star Google review is going to happen. We are going to be accused of not caring, being "in it for the money" and just plain "upselling". I can honestly say that I have not met one veterinarian in my circle of colleagues who has ever made recommendations to the best of their knowledge, that are not in the best interest of the patient. It doesn't mean that bad apples aren't out there, but I truly believe they are few and far between. So where does this disconnect come from? What can we do as a profession to help abolish these "old wives'' tales? How can we empathize with pet owners' concerns without burning ourselves out? I am super proud to share with you a resource created by my office manager Kristen Webb CVPM. She has created it out of a passion and love for veterinary medicine, but also out of a need to create a resource where veterinary professionals and pet owners can find common ground. She has created some thoughtful and well-written articles addressing common issues in vet med free for all to view. Feel free to share ❤️ and stay tuned for some more thought-provoking articles. . . #pulsecheckpet #veterinarymedicine

Founder and CEO Pet Acoustics Inc. has pioneered the development of species-specific music for behavioral balance in animals
We are thrilled to announce the publication of a groundbreaking study by Janet Marlow, M.A., renowned CEO and Sound Behaviorist of Pet Acoustics, in the prestigious International Animal Health Journal. The study, titled "Audiometric Study Reveals Patterns of Age-Related Hearing Loss in Dogs and Cats," marks a significant advancement in our understanding of pet auditory health. This comprehensive research involved the testing of nearly 4,000 dogs and cats using an innovative digital hearing test developed by Janet Marlow. This test, a first-of-its-kind, offers a non-invasive and accurate way to assess the hearing capabilities of our beloved pets. The findings of this study are crucial for pet owners and veterinarians alike, as they provide valuable insights into how age affects the hearing of dogs and cats. This understanding is vital for improving the quality of life of our aging pets. Excitingly, the digital hearing test used in this study is now available for free on the Pet Acoustics website (https://lnkd.in/ecPW2C_q). This tool empowers pet owners to actively participate in the auditory health of their pets, ensuring early detection and management of hearing issues. The full study will be accessible in the second week of January in the International Animal Health Journal. We encourage veterinarians, pet owners, and animal enthusiasts to read this pivotal research to better understand and care for the auditory health of dogs and cats.
