Happy Day of the Girl! We’re celebrating by announcing our report, “Power in Our Truths”: Girls and Gender-Expansive Young People of Color Envisioning Futures Free From Police Violence! In this brief we highlight findings from our survey which explored girls and gender-expansive young folks of color’s feelings about police and police violence. We also offer insights into their ideas for how decision-makers can address police violence and advance safety in their communities. Amid pervasive distrust in police, girls and gender-expansive young people of color proposed actions and systemic solutions through opened ended responses toward advancing justice and safety within their communities. Across responses, what remained evident was their desire for their voices and visions of justice to be centered in efforts to address police brutality. The Justice + Joy National Collaborative Rapid Response Fund (RRF) is open. This fund was created to support young people in leading and organizing in their communities. This funding is for youth by youth and we will determine when rapid response funds are needed based on current events across the country and in specific communities. With election day just weeks away, we still have not seen substantial investment in one key, influential voting block—Gen Z cis and trans girls, young women, and gender-expansive young people of color. In response, the RRF leadership team of young people led by Addison Moore (DC), Genesis Holland (VA), Hely Dodia (NJ) and Kristen Nicole (OR) are launching the RRF as Phase Two of the Fixing Democracy Initiative at Justice and Joy by providing young people with resources to mobilize Gen Z voters and others and to think about what role they can play in leading long-term change. Micro grants of $50 – $500 will be provided to cis and trans girls, young women, and gender expansive young people of color across the nation to organize and host gatherings with their friends and loved ones in their communities, social groups, and families through in real life (IRL) and digital activations across the country.
