👉🏼 Sharing for my #milspouse and #military network! This survey is important in showing how important it is to get better support for military families. Take a few minutes to let your voice be heard!
Our 2024 Military Family Lifestyle Survey is open! Be the change you want to see in the military community and share with your network! https://bit.ly/3TDtHaO The House Armed Services Committee Quality of Life Panel’s final report is now live and aligns with many of our #MFLS recommendations. In one example, the QoL report agrees with out recommendation that the Basic Needs Allowance needs to be more robust and available to service members with dependents with a gross household income less than 200% of federal poverty guidelines. #DoYourPart in advocating for issues like these, too! Do Your Part is made possible by Craig Newmark and Craig Newmark Philanthropies.

Hayley Ann Boswell ⭐️This hit me. Our eldest is onto her 7th school and all four of our children have faced challenges with their education due to being Defence Kidz. Thankfully, they have also thrived. As Defence families, we do not get to pick where we live. The amount of times some snarky person on the phone has said to me, "Why didn't you have them on the wait list from birth?" We, as Defence families, don't get that luxury. How about priority of placement for Defence Kidz in ALL childcare centres. Who needs respite more than a Defence spouse doing it solo? How about State School of CHOICE? We don't get to pick where we live, so how about allowing us to pick the State school that best suits our child regardless of catchment area? Small actionable outcomes that would give Defence families a little bit of power to determine the best educational outcomes for their children. These options are already available to at risk children, so the framework is there. How about our Defence Kidz?

Did you know that military children move an average of 6 to 9 times during their Reception-year 12 education? The resilience they exhibit is nothing short of extraordinary. But it's not just about the numbers; it's about the faces behind them. These little faces are the reason we advocate so fiercely and passionately. We recently created this video that perfectly encapsulates the hard times and the celebrations of our defence families, with the photos supplied by our defence community. It's a poignant reminder of why we do what we do. We're not just advocating for policies or benefits; we're advocating for real people, real families, and real lives. As someone deeply involved in this advocacy, I've seen firsthand the difference it can make. From improved educational opportunities to connecting events for veteran families, the changes we fight for have a tangible impact on these families' lives. It's not just about making their lives easier; it's about honouring their sacrifices and ensuring they have the support they deserve. But there's still so much work to be done. As we look to the future, we must continue to push for meaningful change. We must listen to these families, understand their unique challenges, and work tirelessly to address them. So, I ask you, what changes do you think are most needed to support our veteran families? What can we do to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are met? Share your thoughts in the comments below. If you found this post insightful or helpful, please give it a like and consider reposting it to spread the word. Together, we can make a difference. #MilitaryFamilies #Advocacy #SupportOurveteranfamilies Kelly Hopkins Prof. Neil Curtis Rochelle Feenan Liam V. Rebecca Zanol Miranda Van Hooff

Independence Day is just around the corner! As we approach the celebrations, let's be mindful that this time of year can be tough for individuals with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), particularly veterans, refugees and survivors of domestic violence. Fireworks, though celebratory for some, can trigger immense #stress for others. Let's show compassion and create mindful celebrations. Instead, consider quieter, inclusive ways to honor our traditions that promote #joy without causing unintended harm. Together, we can create a compassionate community that respects and understands each other's experiences. #MentalHealth #Support #CommunityEmpowerment #MentalHealthAwareness #SupportAndCare #acaringvoiceforyou #veterans #refugees #independenceday #PTSD #domesticeviolence

Retired Military Special Needs Dad || I help military special needs families by highlighting quality of life issues
🔥 Attention #militaryfamily, #EFMP, and SNP communities. Here are highlights from the Military Family Readiness Council which just met an hour ago and allowed the public to view the meeting: ➡ The Military Health System (MHS) intends to re-attract 7% of care from the private sector back to the MTFs ➡ DoD intends to do this by making the MTF the “easy choice” for #militaryfamilies ➡ New TRICARE contract (referred to as the T-5 contract) will broaden access to tele-health ➡ There will be some incentives for the TRICARE network to refer patients back to the MTFs if waitlists are too long and MTF capacity exist ➡ T-5 contract will introduce Alternate Payment Models which rewards providers for delivering high quality and coordinated care ➡ T-5 contract will include a network adequacy provision which introduces punitive fees for inaccurate provider directories (supposedly higher than similar civilian network provisions) ➡ DHA is focusing on digital/data modernization to streamline provider paperwork burden and receive more data back on the health of the provider networks ➡ DHA is streamlining their ability to resolve MTF manning shortfalls by conducting some assignments by demand and utilizing a TDY specialist (circuit rider) program to cover gaps Here are my initial thoughts for the #military #specialneeds community: ➡ Provider directory accuracy is a huge improvement for the network – see my last post on how inaccurate it recently has been. https://lnkd.in/gS844CX5 ➡ Broadening of telehealth is also another huge improvement, especially for #mentalhealth and #behavioralhealth. However, much like medical care, in-person appointments should still be expected for non-routine care. ➡ Unfortunately, there was no mention on specialty referrals being placed before #PCS time, which is where most #EFMP families experience gaps in service; but it is included in the T-5 contract For CSM Mike Weimer and CMSgt David Flosi, the experience of accessing #healthcare for families will largely depend on how easy it is for them to establish care based on a new diagnosis and during PCS season. In particular, your EFMP families, as perhaps the heaviest users of the medical system, will inform you if these changes are actually making a difference. Thank you for your comments at the meeting and for thinking about the families!

"Garbage in, garbage out." Typically this is a phrase that you apply to how bad inputs results in bad outputs or outcomes. In this case, the #TRICARE West provider directories have potentially been found to be outdated and inaccurate. A provider search completed in early 2023 yielded 111,619 raw results - 64% (72,156 providers) were found to be duplicates, closed, or not in the West region at all. Of the 39,463 providers left, 6% (2,398 providers) were found to be in the exclusion or sanction databases. "Garbage in" https://lnkd.in/gbgiSR3j So what does this mean for the #military #specialneeds community? #EFMP and SNP families who are up for assignment are potentially being set up for denial of orders (because there appears to be no providers), or being moved to areas where there appears to be providers (but there really aren't). This results in compassionate reassignments, #militaryfamilies in limbo waiting for new orders (potentially for months), cancellation of orders (hope they didn't sell the house already), or a move to an area resulting in a huge gap in medically-necessary services. "Garbage out" In the end one of the most vulnerable populations, our #militarychildren and #militaryspouses, are experiencing #qualityoflife hardships that should have been prevented - which further degrades #readiness, #retention, #resilience, and #recruitment. If this issue hasn't been corrected yet, it needs to be corrected immediately! Military Times

Reflecting on my Peace Corps journey, I've been asked to share some advice for future volunteers in an upcoming manual. As someone who's moved frequently, I've learned the importance of orienting oneself to a new place. Moving to a new community can be disorienting. Take time to explore your surroundings and understand how your community can support you. Create a personal needs assessment by mapping out immediate, short-term, long-term, and non-critical needs. Identifying local resources can ensure you're physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually well. Even if you're settled in your own home, this approach can help you better understand your surroundings. Check out this worksheet and try it for yourself! #PeaceCorps #VolunteerLife #Adaptation #CommunityEngagement #PersonalGrowth

It’s Volunteers’ Week 💚 This celebration is a chance to recognise, celebrate and show appreciation for volunteers and all they contribute to our communities and societies. Volunteers’ Week was first established in 1984, by what was then known as Volunteering England, and this year marks the 40th anniversary. I wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate the work of Samaritans. There are 23,000 volunteers throughout the UK; answering calls, running the 200 nationwide branches; and fundraising to keep this vital service accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Samaritans’ vision is that fewer people die by suicide. It’s not only there for moments of crisis, however, but for times when life is difficult and getting you down, when a listening ear might help you before you get to crisis point. And that’s what the volunteers do – listen with empathy and without judgement. As well as listening on phones, on email, online, Samaritans work with prisons, schools, colleges, hospitals, military, railways and other outreach programmes. In 2023, Samaritans volunteers responded to more than 3.3 million calls, responding to a call for help every 10 seconds!
