It only took 7 days to set the first half of the cross laminated timber (CLT) modules for Integrated Design Cubed | IDCUBED’s workforce housing building in Montana. This project is the first large-scale CLT building in North America. To prepare for this, the foundations were built with precision - perfectly level and to exact dimensions. The modules arrived on site with finishes and fixtures pre-installed. New world's tallest timber skyscraper planned for the USA. The timber tower will consist of 55 floors, making it the tallest mass timber skyscraper in the world. This remarkably ambitious proposal in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, looks set to take timber to new heights. Designed by MGA | Michael Green Architecture, a leader in modern timber construction, this project will become the world's tallest timber skyscraper once complete. While the exact height of the skyscraper is yet to be confirmed, it is expected to surpass the current tallest all-timber building, the 85.4 meters (280 ft) Mjøstårnet in Norway. Given the height, it's likely that some concrete reinforcement will be incorporated for stability. Many people get concerned at the thought of a wooden skyscraper, imagining it will be some sort of tinderbox that will ignite with a misplaced cigarette or kitchen fire. However, modern mass timber (such as glulam and cross-laminated timber) isn't like traditional lumber. Instead, it's manufactured in factories and consists of many layers of wood glued together to form a much stronger wooden beam that can even perform better in fire than steel due to the way it chars rather than fully igniting. Sustainable Architecture on the Allotment Needed to erect some protection for our tenderstem broccoli from hungry pigeons on our allotment this weekend - but how to do it only using materials we had available on site. A little glimpse into the challenges (and joy) of sustainable architecture. We started by using the small mesh cloches that had been used to protect the broccoli when it was first planted, setting them upright at the ends of the row. We pegged them in place with a couple of steel peg stakes that we had been using to mark the position of the row. Next we took some old chicken wire we found up by our shed and wrapped it around the perimeter of the planting, in an oval to protect the sides. Finally we inserted three long canes that had been used to stake runner beans across the top. We infilled the ends with the chicken wire that we had used on the earlier cloche set-up and then cut some more of the old chicken wire to cover the top. We pegged it in place with a couple of twigs so that we could remove it when needed to weed, and to pick our lovely broccoli later in the season. So, job done, very satisfying, no new materials, and all those used available again in future for another purpose. Now to the day job and how to make our buildings' architecture more sustainable.
