Interesting read on non-compete agreements. As someone who has signed these agreements in the past, I can see both sides of the argument for and against them. While businesses use non-competes to protect their intellectual property, customer relationships, and trade secrets, they are often used in situations that don't necessarily require them. We've seen cases where non-competes have been used to punish employees for leaving (see the case of the bartender in the article embedded), or to deter them from leaving altogether.
