Power Integrations has introduced innovative single-board gate drivers that offer active thermal management for inverter modules, leading to improved system utilization and increased reliability by reducing the bill-of-material count. According to Thorsten Schmidt, the product marketing manager at Power Integrations, developing a single-board gate driver for the new dual-style IGBT modules presented a significant challenge. The compact SCALE-iFlex XLT gate drivers are designed to fit inside the module's outline, allowing for mounting directly on the module. This unique feature provides converter system designers with a high degree of mechanical design freedom. The SCALE-iFlex XLT dual-channel gate drivers come equipped with Negative Temperature Coefficient data reporting, enabling an isolated temperature measurement of the power module. This capability facilitates accurate thermal management of converter systems, empowering designers to optimize thermal design and achieve a 25 to 30 percent increase in converter power using the same hardware. Additionally, the isolated NTC readout simplifies hardware complexity by eliminating the need for multiple cables, connectors, and additional isolation barrier crossing circuits. The gate drivers utilize Power Integrations' SCALE-2 chip set to minimize component count, thereby enhancing overall reliability. Full confession- when I stared in EV I read hundreds of books about battery chemistry, propulsion, electric systems and thermal management. But it was only when I purchased a Bolt with the full intention of doing a full systems autopsy did I really get it. They were extremely well designed and packaged. Cables we’re grouped, labeled and organized. Service Disconnects, inertia switches, redundant solid block and digital fuses in easily packaged junction boxes were way ahead of their time. Cooling lines and data cables perfectly run with quick disconnects and QR code labels. The main pack disconnect under the rear passenger seat was like the iPhone of HV disconnects. I never saw anything like it. Even the E-brakes were so elegant with simple polarity contacts for reversal. To me it was a master class. I get the LG chem pouch chemistry didn’t work. But electrical and mechanical systems were stunning and made a huge impression on the thoughtfulness of deliberate HV systems planning.

li-ion batteries are more popular nowadays due to it's many advantages like- (1) High energy density (2) Longer life (3) Less time for charging (4) Lower maintenance (5) Light weight (6) Low cost This is the 22V 6A li-ion battery pack which is a small part of our capstone project used to make an Uninterruptable DC variable power supply. It's calculations are as follows- single battery- 3.7v 1200mah 6 batteries are connected in series- 3.7 x 6 = 22.2V 5 batteries are connected in parallel- 1200 x 5 = 6000mah i.e. 6A total batteries required- 5x6 = 30qty. Battery Management System (BMS) module is necessary for protecting the battery pack from over voltage, over current, short circuit, etc. It comes according to the connection of battery back i.e. 1s BMS for single series battery, such as 2s, 3s, 4s, 6s, 10s BMS are available in market. Usually spot welding is preferred for li-ion batteries connection but if you have proper soldering skills then it will be suitable for the battery pack.
