Even the most skilled software engineering leaders face challenges aligning their actions with their level of responsibility. Often, they find themselves engrossed in operational tasks—activating feature flags in production, delving into logs and telemetry, occasionally coding, and being on-call. This hands-on approach certainly motivates the team. ...However, this focus on operational tasks can inadvertently lead these leaders to overlook other aspects of their role that are equally, if not more, critical - articulate the value of engineering to the stakeholders, engage and lead the strategic planning and of course focus on a personal growth as a leader, not as software engineer. Upon stepping into a software engineering leadership role, it's essential to prioritize the responsibilities that come with it, rather than solely what brings personal satisfaction. If you find greater joy in tasks like coding, reviewing logs, and designing system architecture — activities more aligned with your previous role — then reconsidering your position might be wise. It could be more fulfilling to transition into a technology-focused role, such as a Principal Engineer, where your passions and skills can be better utilized. This Month marks 1 year at DataGuard, As I've SDR'd and AE'd here I thought I'd write a few tips that have helped me along the way. Collaboration: Not just with your peers (shoutout to Loyd Spillane, Ashish Gandhi and Matthew Howlett) but also with leadership (Nicolas Pabst von Ohain, Viktor Stryczek Max Seidl) will help you go far. No silly questions: In the beginning, you'll know very little so don't be afraid to ask. It's better to ask a seemingly foolish question now than 6 months down the line when you should know the answer. Bring your personality: Don't shy away from being yourself, this doesn't mean being brash or rude. It means bringing out the side of you that A - got you hired and B - makes people like you. People want to work with people no robots. Keep learning: Look at courses, in-house enablement, books and LI for all things growth. 1% every day over a year will pay dividends.
