As I dive into a review of related literature for my fellowship application, aimed at aligning local development goals with global trends in good governance, I’m taking a moment to reflect on a significant milestone—my first anniversary as a local government employee. Leaving behind a role I had committed to for nearly a decade wasn’t easy. The long hours and constant travel were pulling me away from my family, and it became clear that being present for them was my top priority. Moving closer to home has allowed me to support and engage with my loved ones more effectively. This transition was also fueled by my drive to apply the skills and insights I gained at Erasmus University Rotterdam. My studies in the Netherlands ignited a passion for urban planning and resilience that I was eager to bring to a local setting where they could make a real impact. This year has been a whirlwind—juggling the political realities of local government while staying true to technical principles has been both challenging and rewarding. But the commitment and sincerity of my colleagues have been incredibly inspiring. I’m especially grateful to our City Mayor, who took a leap of faith in me despite not knowing me personally. His support and trust have been instrumental in my transition, and I’m deeply thankful for the opportunity to contribute to our community. Reflecting on my journey, I’m reminded of a metaphor from The White Tiger, comparing society to a chicken coop—trapped with limited options. Many I work with view their government roles as their only path, clinging to the security it offers. This perspective has made me even more appreciative of my own journey and the privileges I’ve enjoyed, from my education to the unwavering support of my family and the trust of our City Mayor. Despite moments of self-doubt, I recognize how fortunate I am. The opportunities I’ve received, the support from my family, and the faith of our City Mayor have all been crucial to my growth. As I celebrate this anniversary, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my family, my colleagues, and our City Mayor for making this year so impactful. Queen Mary University of London has grown from strength-to-strength. Below is a link summarising our progress at the mid-point of our 2030 Strategy - worth a read! Some high-level achievements include: 1) Increase in income from £420m to £720m. 2) Cash reserves increased from zero to over £350m, providing financial resilience. 3) Delivering £4.4bn per year economic impact to the UK. 4) Number of students increasing from 20,000 to 33,000. 5) 75% increase in student applications. 6) 51% increase in study abroad students. 7) Ranked 14th in the world, and 5th in the UK, for research quality. 8) 42% increase in funding from competitive research grants. 9) 400 IP Agreements; 3 spin-outs created per year and increasing. 10) Top in the country (UK KEF ranking) for IP & Commercialisation; Research Partnerships, Public & Community Engagement. 11) First university to be awarded the platinum watermark for public engagement. 12) Ranked top in the country for social mobility. 13) Closed the attainment gap between students from ethnic minority backgrounds and white students. 14) A top 20 University targeted by leading employers. 15) Ranked highly for graduate earnings, with the Daily Mail ranking us 12th in the UK and the Telegraph ranking us top in the country for graduate salaries in two subject areas. 16) 73% increase in philanthropic income. 17) Over 900 strategic hires joined, with £340m invested in our digital & physical infrastructure for research & innovation. 18) Increased our footprint from 5 locations to 9 locations in London.
