Many in the mentorship have observed that the musical theater program is attracting students away from choir. Kids seem more invested in musical theater, leaving choir less populated. But instead of simply assuming it's because they prefer that music, let's dig deeper. What are the underlying reasons for this shift? How can we make choir more appealing to students? The primary focus of Musical Journey Level 1A is to reinforce technical and musical skills acquired in the Tales of a Musical Journey series to better prepare students for more advanced musical works, as well as to provide a wide selection of recital pieces. Level 1A consists of folk tunes and pedagogical pieces, while Level 1B adds classical repertoire. Each book is divided into three sections: Solo Pieces, Etudes, and Duets. This series is most effective when students work on each section simultaneously (i.e. solo piece alongside the etude, then the duet) before moving on to the next pieces. While it’s not necessary to assign every piece in successive order, it’s not advisable to skip too many, as each book is sequenced in a logical manner to promote a holistic learning experience. The Musical Journey series encourages children to develop their imagination alongside the pieces. Ask them to listen to the soundtracks,* create stories, color the pictures in the book or even draw their own pictures. Have them describe the character or mood of each piece. These beautifully written compositions will take students on a musical journey that enhances their understanding of music and helps develop artistry and expression in performance. #piano #pianoteachingresources #irinagorin

CARE FOR YOUR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS I remember my first year at Obafemi Awolowo University, where I majored in drums and minored in voice. One day, I was admiring a beautiful drum set in the lobby. It belonged to a senior student named Groover Jay (shout out to you if you see this). As I played it briefly and leaned on the floor tom, another senior approached me and firmly corrected me. He told me, "You’ve just mishandled that musical instrument, and that's wrong." His rebuke stayed with me and made me a better musician. Even though I always took care of musical instruments, that conversation made me more intentional about it. Today, I share a principle with fellow musicians: the way you treat your musical instrument says a lot about you. Whether you’re a singer or an instrumentalist, treat your instruments with the utmost care, whether they belong to you or an organization you work with. Clean them, protect them from dust, perform regular check-ups, and treat them like a baby, whether you have one or many. On a lighter note, if a lady tells me a drummer is interested in her, I often advise her to observe how he treats his musical instrument. It might sound funny, but it’s true.
